Hello, I'm new to the Forum. I have a fascination with old stuff, and finding treasures, like most of you I'm sure. I found this piece at a yard sale yesterday got it for a buck. I thought it was pretty neat looking. Please take a look at it and let me know if you know anything about it. Looks Native American to me, but I am not an expert on this kind of stuff.

I'm not sure but I think it is native american, a thunderbird effigy. The way it's marked solid brass makes me think it's more modern though. Maybe something they would sell to tourists? Still for a buck you did alright

There's a rule-of-thumb when touring a garage sale or flea market...

1. Be a smart shopper: 'Always know what you're buying and what you're willing to pay'

2. Don't be a dumb shopper: 'Don't buy something, paying big bucks and try finding out later what it is or its worth'

3. Walk away: 'If you have questions about the item or the price is too high, always be willing to walk away'

4. Don't waste your money: Don't pay a $1 for something you'd resell at your garage sale for $0.50

I agree with your rules... But I'll most likely put it on a belt and wear it! Whats a dollar anyway.... I don't do much yard selling, I'm trying to not be like my mother and grandmother.... Hoarders and collectors. Bad enough I will have to move and deal with all their stuff one day.

Im sure some of it is crap but check her items on eBay. You may be surprised what some of these old items sell for.

I did a quick search and it looks similar to this one without the torquoise.. http://www.eaglerocktradingpost.com/beltbuckles.htm

BTW Welcome to TreasureNet. It sold for $199. It looks as if an Indian glued on some torquoise, added some chemical patina for effect and sold it with some great marketing. :D

Oh Yeah I would definitely check on the value of things before getting rid of stuff, besides that wont be happening for a while I hope.....My Sister and I would have to take off like 2 months of work and move to Montana where all the stuff is just to go through it all.

WOW that looks just like mine! like almost identical.. minus the turquoise. The shape, and eagle look the same.. that's neat.. thanks for the picture! And thanks for the Welcome!

I dont think so. Im pretty sure its a Native American Navajo Thunderbird. Its identical except for the silver dots and torquoise. maybe 1920. http://www.eaglerocktradingpost.com/478n.htm

If you sell it Becky, attach this link to it. It will help make the sale and remember NO CLEANING, patina sells. ;D Ill give you double what you paid right now lol. :D

Brass for a buck is always a good deal and your buckle is pretty cool. I bought a boxlot of misc. brass stuff at a local auction recently for 20 bucks. Wife kept 2 pair of really nice candlesticks she liked and a fairly large solid brass elephant and I sold the rest of the stuff at the local metal recycling yard for 35 bucks... :icon_thumleft:

Welcome and I work with a guy that mines turquoise and sells it raw or refined if you would like to have yours made like that one?

The most important 'rule of thumb' was already followed by becky21b. She bought it because she liked it. Not because she planned on researching it after the fact. Also, let's add that she KNEW what it was before buying it.
