Brass and wood "what's it" and a cool moth...

Found this yesterday in the river and am not sure what it might be. I did have one suggestion of it being the end of a fishing pole. It very well could be. I haven't been able to figure out how a reel would hook to it though. Maybe that part is broken off? Any thoughts?

Here is a neat "humming moth" that flew over to the Butterfly bush where I was taking the picture and started feeding. His wings beat very fast like a humming bird, but the flash "froze" them in place. We have tons of them on the Butterfly bushes and I enjoy watching them flit about.

Sphinx moth, I believe. They loved our 4 o'clocks. On the unknown: Perhaps there were a couple of rings that the reel attached to that have fallen off, like a fly pole of sorts. Inserting the reel tightened up the rings, and a thumb screw tightened it to a ring. If the reel base was the length of the piece, it would't go too far. Short of that, does it actually say fishing pole to you?

Here are a couple more pics. I just noticed that it is inscribed with the work "MOHAWK" in quotes and they do make fishing rods now, so that is probably what it is. I still don't know what the hooky thing is used for and I couldn't find anything similar on-line.

Common names can be regional, and even insect books don't agree. Genus species? You guys are out there, I know. But they are colorful!

Just looked it up: Sphinx moth, hawk moth, hornworm. Winner winner, two chicken dinners.

could be a 'Clear Wing' moth-- they do hover and are day time moths--
just took another look- yes, I can see right through the wing---so.....

I just know they had better stay away from my tomatoes or they will be extinct moths. No quarter.

I'll put fourth two theories .... neither of which I can prove but could be plausible =)

1: The hook is really a sort of guard for a fly fishing rod so if your casting hand get wet/slippery, your rod doesn't go flying

2: The rod was telescoping and that hooks onto your belt or bait bag or something

very cool either way =)

I caught this guy raiding my tomatoes not too long ago. He's been doing it for years. I give him quarter every time. I'm a softy that way...
