Hi--I'm brand new at metal detecting. Bought a Wal*Mart Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505 on the spur of the moment, but so far have used it only in the back yard. Lots of "hits" but very few "digs", as the soil currently has a hardness somewhere between cement and battleship armor, and well intermeshed with tree roots.

I'd be interested to find out how long the 505 has been on the market. The Bounty Hunter home site (detecting.com) has absolutely nothing about it. Anyone know?

Also, any commets on the merits of the 505? Good, bad, piece of junk?? (I'm too new to really know what I want to look for.)

Thanks--Luke

Bounty Hunter detectors have been around a long time and have the reputation for getting many started in the hobby of metal detecting. I'm prety sure your detector is considered an entry leve detector and should serve you well until you are ready to upgrade. Go the the Bounty Hunter thread and you will find lots of helpful information. Monty

Walmart sells 3 detectors at most of its stores, more online. The 505 is considered to be for the "Advanced" user.
I have had mine for about a month and a half and have found lots of clad and 3 silver dimes. I like it because I can look at the screen and see what type of coin the target is and its approximate depth. I just couldn't justify spending $1000 on a high end detector because the hobby is more than 75% sweat rather than electronics and it would take a lot longer to get a return on my investment.

Welcome Luke,

I am kinda new at this to and bought a Pioneer 505 at Walmart a little over a month ago. I read the book several times and watched the video about 6 times and practiced with it. I am very satisfied with my 505, I think like anything you have to really learn how to use it properly for it to work properly. Before I bought mine I read some reviews on the 505 and there were positive ones and negative ones but I think the negative ones was because people don't take the time to learn the machine, they just want to get out there and start detecting. Like anything practice makes better! I am really enjoying my 505 and hope you do to, just take your time to really learn the detector and it will work well for you. I also bought some noise cancellation head phones and super bunny akaline batteries (ya know the pink bunny that keeps going and going) haha.

Also, I bought this very tough black spade with a handle about a foot long and had the man at the store file the sides down to look like knife and it works good in hard dirt.

Thanx, ringding. Sounds like it's working fine for you. And I certainly can relate to not spending a whole lot of money when I don't even know what I'm interested in yet!

Thanx Deb. Glad to hear that you're satisfied with the 505. You're certainly right about practice, practice, practice. I also got some headphones and am very familiar with the bunny batteries.
