That is a real good idea thanks for pointing this out.
 

I still like the idea of machining short sleeves out of steel. The reason is boring long holes is more costly then short sleeves.
 

The real total cost is in the machining and tooling thereof.

One can buy second hand metal castings that will aid in a steady rest with ball bearing rollers to assist in end boring of metal on the lathe.
 

Got lucky and bought a sherline mill and mini lathe with a fair amount of tooling that will help things along for a song.
