Hello All,

I don't usually post rusty iron in the Whatzit threads...but this one is interesting.

I looked through the 1897 Sears catalog for it, but no luck...

It look like a wrench from a bullet mold to me. Take a look at this one on this website. I think it is about the tenth or eleventh picture down. If you notice it is offset also,Jonathon.

You may be on to something, dimensions appear very close.

Wish they had a few more pics.
Yes I agree but what could the hex wrench be possibly for? I cannot think of what it could possibly fit that is related to a gun? Interesting. Nice find johnreb.
I would like to see this after its been cleaned up. Does it look like it could be broken?

This just occured to me- Since it was in a field, it could easily be a wrench for a tractor. The farmer could have stopped the tractor and used the wrench on it or something... Though it does look a lot like the bullet-mold thing.

Could be an injector wrench for a diesel, if it´s only a few decades old ?

Looks like a key to a stop cock, you can see on the handle sticking up whats left of a stop so it cannot be over tightened ,could have bee a tractor fuel shut of

on large truck rims like on simi's the lug nuts on the inside wheel takes a cone shaped nut with only a square head with internal and external threads. then you put on the outside wheel and it takes a regular nut that screws down over the external threads of the first one. some times when you needed to undo them they would be locked together and they would both turn making it impossible to remove. they had a tool like this wrench that would fit into the recesses of a truck rim to fit over the outer nut while you turned the inner with another wrench. it was very simple but effective. other than that, a wrench with offset handle for tightening jam nuts without busting knuckles?

I like the idea of 'half of a bullet mold' but the bullet mold handle shown on the site is octagonal - 8 sided and the What'sit? is an hexagonal - 6 sided wrench-type, thinga'mebob ;D

could it be an old sparkplug wrench? Here's one from possibly a motorcycle tool kit.

I believe the motorcycle sparkplug wrench is right on. I had an early model Honda 350 and the sparkplug wrence was almost identical, even offset a bit to reach deeper into the cylinder head and grasp the base of the plug. It was made of pot metal or cheap steel as I remember and it would have deteriorated very quickly in the ground, thus making it appear much older than it actually was. Monty

That's it! Even has the little iron "nub" underneath it. :)

I think we can mark this one Solved! And thanks you all for your help.

Best Wishes,

Hello, I am the owner of The Wrenching News Website and both wrenches pictured are scythe snatch wrenches. A snatch is the iron part that holds the blade on the handle. I have over 30 different ones in my collection. I also have a couple new old stock scythes with the original wrenches attached.

There are over 50 on an auction in Sedalia, Mo I helped organize. See lots 2162 thru 2166 at

It makes sense with the other scythe parts that were found. I guess it attached to the scythe handle. Good ID Bus. Thanks for posting. http://www.google.com/patents?id=YA...=X&oi=book_result&resnum=10&ct=result#PPA1,M1
