Hello All,

I don't usually post rusty iron in the Whatzit threads...but this one is interesting.

I looked through the 1897 Sears catalog for it, but no luck...

whats interesting is -
its offsett, not flat -
tells me that the wrench was designed to protect the knuckles as the wrench handle would pass over a surface of some kind
also has a raised panel, like you would place your thumb over the panel to apply pressure as your turning the nut

According to my Old Tools book the hex and offset shape is similar to some Steam Tractor wrenches.

Site I found it on was pre-CW, and was gone by 1900.

Cool photo of that steam tractor.

We don't have too much CW stuff out here in New Mexico, (some but not much) so I'm probably way of base here. To me it looks like a rusted up bottle opener.

I think manufactured wrenches came out during the Industrial Revolution for steam machinery in the late 1800's. Before that, tools were made by local blacksmiths.

It sure does look like one. I thought it was a hex head wrench . Maybe clean it up a bit would help.

Hmmm...so more like an old-fashioned "church key"?

The bottle cap was invented in 1892. http://www.google.com/patents?id=mB...258&source=gbs_selected_pages&cad=0_1#PPA1,M1
