Hit a spot in the water yesterday and pulled out 6 Minnie balls and 1 general service eagle button...then this came out. I thought it was a brass bolster but the center looks brass or copper also. Thanks for any help. Kieth

If the rectangular-shaped groove in the center also shows on the other side, it may be a slot that's filled with concretion. If it is indeed a rectangular slot through the object's center, you may have found the brass guard from a civil war era fighting-knife. That would be appropriately "in context" with the minie-balls you found.

Cannonballguy...you are correct! Did not want to mess with it but scaped the "orange" area and it broke away as rusty sand. Will post anther pic asap.

Thanks guys....have found a couple pics of Bowie knives with this type of bolster today!
