I am not sure what else to say about it..hmm...i mean there is no way enamel was ever on the back and it is completely flat but the front is correct as far as i can tell. I have no idea how to attach a picture from my phone. Does this help any?

Most original medals should have enamel on both the front and the back, the front will have writing on the enamel, but there are some rare versions that only have enamel on the front and most of these versions have maker's marks.

That being said photos would help greatly in determining if your's is original or reproduction.

There are also a great many reproductions on the market.

What is the providence of your find? In the ground? In a drawer? Family jewelry chest? Yard sale? Flea market?

Was there a reason for a real one to be where yours showed up? It was a German/Prussian military OR civil honor.

And this was found in an antique store from a man who was stationed in West Germany in the 70s. I have bought many authentic items from him.

I'm posting the photos for you, but I can't determine if it's real or not, it appears to have age and that is in favor of it being real.

Hi, let me start by saying I collected German medals from both world wars for several years and that I have seen more than my share of fakes and repros. Looking at your photo of the front blown up, I'm sorry to say..... I get the feeling that it is a repro. The main reason is if you look at the eagles, the details just aren't as crisp as I would expect from an original. The originals were made by jewelers and they paid a lot of attention to detail. Yours appears cast to me.

Thank you for the info, even if it is bad news. I buy my medals cheap from yard sales and antique stores. I paid maybe $45 for this medal in particular, but i have had the rest authenticated so ill just take this one out of the case. Thanks again.

Well at least you're not out too much. A good rule of thumb when it comes to medals and insignia is that if it seems to good to be true it probably is. I have made some good finds like that over the years but they are getting scarce these days. Oh, and by the way, welcome to t-net!
