I got back out to the shoreline this morning for a couple hours, inspired by Steelheadwill. I started detecting a new area and after about an hour found a tight concentration of musket balls. I made quick work of the musket balls and being that I was about three miles from the car and it was looking like rain, started heading back to the car. I walked down to the low tide line and found the two bottles. On my way back up the beach I found the button which is actually the first button I've found on the entire stretch of beach.

About two miles from the car I nearly tripped on it. A third of it was above the mud and has probably sat like that for the past 300 years! My first thought when I found it was "I am not hauling that back to the car"...but of course I couldn't leave it behind. I started the long trip back to the car...with my 36 POUND CANNONBALL!!! This is the 4th cannonball from this beach and the largest so far. I was tiring quickly so I took off my sweatshirt and fashioned a sling...and dropped the frigging thing on my finger! It bled and I'm going to lose the fingernail...but it was worth it!

I always knew you had balls but this is crazy....must have been quite the hall back...save some for me...

when is the museum opening???

great stuff bud! :headbang:

Don't recall ever seeing one of those posted! I'd say there's a bit of value attached to that one too, but certainly not enough to think about selling.

Really can't imagine how many must be out there.

One of these days you're going to hit a cannon... so might as well start thinking about how you're going to get it home. ;D

That's just crazy! :headbang: You sure do have the luck! My arms would have fallen off!

Great find!!!

I carried a 40# piece of petrified wood about a mile once..... In the heat of the summer........ My sympathies!

And he SCORES! A Big Congrats on that one Romeo that certainly is a nice-sized ball for sure! :headbang: The only place to find them in that big size range here are

near the old coastal artillery fortifications or to happen across an old mortar shot.....otherwise its usually the 10lb Parrotts or the 6 and 12 pound spherical case and solid shot.

It IS worth the "Blood, Sweat, and Tears" as they're usually at least 2 feet down in the hard Earth here.....That's sweet that it was at least sticking out of the sand and

you didn't have to dig your tail off to get down to it, just LUG it over 2 miles! ;D Very nice day when you find one of those! :occasion14: :occasion14:

Oh boy ! 36 pounds, and two miles, You do deserve it !

Display case, or pedistal ?

That's a Big Ball !

I know I carry a fair amount of junk in my pouch, but that one would not quite fit :hello2: :notworthy: (not meaning its junk  )

Impressive hunt....awesome finds man , :headbang:WTG!

Nice story and hunt! You deserve that one. Is it solid or does it have a fuse hole? HH, Mike

Solid...after half a mile I was wishing it was hollow!

Well worth the pain of hauling it out!!

Your a real trooper! Carrying home a 36 pounder while injured is worthy of some kind of reward. It looks to be in great shape, a great addition to the collection......though displaying it might be tough to figure out. And I agree with IP, one of these days your going to find a cannon, and you know you just can't leave it out there!

Where there's a will there's a way...I kind of hope I don't NEED to have to figure it out...

A nice little signal cannon would be welcome though!

Well I would say you will need one he*l of a sweatshirt to manage a cannon sling. This is a rather historic find and I am seriously wishing to see it up on the banner. If not for historical value, monetary value, for the dedication value.... You are a asset to the hobby to carry such a exhausting sized projectile 2 miles. I have a hard enough time with a axe head and pocket full of square nails.

Very well done Romeo..... What state are you in again? I did not realize there were that sized balls used anywhere in the US. I really need to do some more research. Great job!!!
