I've posted before about the 2 black pennies that i have, thought they might of been steel pennies from the 40's but i finally found them and they are 2001's (D), they are slightly larger than a regular penny, and dark grey in color,if you turn them over the edge is raised higher on the back side, and they both have a slight 'bow' to them, as you can see, the detail on them is more intense than a regular penny, definately not a copper penny! But the fact that they are larger brings another question, also they are not as heavy as a 'regular' penny, what could they be made of and why?... Here are a few pictures.
thanks for taking the time!
Trish

Re: Black Pennies 2001 D (pictures)

I do know the mint makes coins for other country's. once in a while a blank will be run through a US coin stamping machine. That is a possibility. take it to a coin dealer for their opinion. BUT DO NOT UNDER ANY CONDITIONS SELL IT TO HIM IF HE MAKES YOU AN OFFER. Just get his opinion. You may have a mint error or you may have just a counterfit.

I didnt see your old post, so the first question i would have is- Does it stick to a magnet?

Trish,

Very interesting pennies! I seems like you're not alone however. Check out this link. http://www.cointalk.org/archive/index.php/t-1087.html
There are others with the the same type of pennies but different dates.
Strange! Good luck on finding some answers I will keep looking also. You have my curiosity up now.

Re: BLACK PENNYS 2001D (pictures)

I just put the two top pennies on my hot wood stove a couple hours ago - they were quite shiney like the 07 . now they look like a '43' steel . I still doesn't explain why Trish's are slightly larger , but it is an easy way to change their color .

Re: BLACK PENNYS 2001D (pictures)

you have a couple of weird pennies there the one on the right face up and on the left face down appear to be different than the other two and check out the flatness of the detail in the beards weird I would show em to someone any major coin shows coming your way?
the advice for NOT selling them to the 1st dealer you meet is sound though

I found one awhile back which I think is just like your examples there. The same color, larger than a normal cent, bowed. It gave a low conductor signal on my detector.

I almost broke my detector in a rage.
OH dont do that! LOL.....if i ever find out why these pennies are the way they are i'll be glad to let you know....go to the websight that Treasure Diver posted 'CoinTalk' their talking about the same pennies. But no one seems to know why they are larger than a normal penny and bowed in the back, thats the strange part.

If I'm not wrong, those are unplated planchet cents. It is possible to remove the copper coating from clad cents, but usually it'll leave the details of the cent looking worn and dull. As far as the size, perhaps zinc-only cents are softer and pressure will make them expand?

I left some pennies on my dash, in the hot sun, with the windows up and I was surprised that several pennies actually became bowed and slightly larger from the heat! Mine remained the same color but Mojjax was able to prove the color can change from heat on his stove.

look at the back of the coin on the word cent i see clearly a nice Double die
dont you think.

also when you say slightly larger do you meen the thickness of the coin because thats not that uncommen

the thickness is the same as a regular penny, they are larger in width, you can actually lay a regular penny on top of the odd ones and be able to see the edge.

Kinda thinking out loud here but...it looks like in the picture that they are double rimmed. Meaning the penny die was stamped on a larger blank than originally intended. There is a small fraction of an edge outside the "normal" rim on these. Very odd...I just wonder if they were not struck on the wrong blank.
Just curious but are they the same size as a nickel?

I think my former post pointed in the right direction. Did you have it checked?
