I have a birdstone that was found by my great grandfather while farming his fields in the 1930's. I've been told that even though it was found in NY, that it might be from Ohio. Any information would be great... value etc. It has cross hatching and pop eyes.

That could be. We don’t have that stuff here and I’m not familiar with it. I do have a big piece a guy in W VA sent me and it’s black. I never tried to work any.
IDK what the material is, but cannel coal is indeed found in Illinois.
Cannel coals have been found in Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and West Virginia....

Probably depends on the texture and weight. I have a book that tells the different materials they used.

I’m sure it’s found during coal mining in IL. We have no shortage of coal in my state. When I said we don’t have it here, I meant there’s no surface deposits that the native Americans used to make artifacts.
Without exception? (IDK, so I'm asking 🤔)
Might not there have been surface deposits 2500-5000 years ago?
I would think mining coal since ancient times could easily have depleted surface deposits.

There is a fantastic Haundensonee museum and teaching center in Victor NY- upstate is home to many nations and they are so helpful with understanding their culture and love seeing and sharing about artifacts. I'd suggest contacting Ganandagon and sending your pictures for review- if from Ohio it may have been part of a trade at Chimney Bluffs which was a sacred meeting, gathering and hunting ground for many more groups than I think we know of! Really awesome heirloom to have, thank you for sharing!

Never say never, right? You would think if it was readily available we would find artifacts made from it. I’ve never found or heard of anything made from it being found in my area. OH and PA are where I see artifacts made from it are found. I’m going to dig out the piece I have and make something with it. I’ll know more about it after I work some.,

Send this guy a email on you tube. He digs artifacts out of the Ohio river.
