This is a repost. New here and posted in the wrong area and it was suggested that i move it.

Checking in from Richmond VA. Recent finds from a plowed field. In both fields where the bird point was found the white quarts really stood out. I'm unsure about what I'm calling a stone hammer. The field where this was found is 99% angular smoky quarts and small amounts of white and crystal clear. This stone is very smooth and feels sort of, for the lack of a better description, oiled. I'm on the fence if this is an artifact. I would welcome
some opinions.

I don't think you have a bird point its appears to be a broken point maybe rowan? Just my thoughts.. nice finds thanks for sharing!

Most of the bird points I find are more triangular in shape... we are in the same region too

Nice finds!

It could be from a broken price. If so they added the barb and notch. The photos aren't the best but they are there. Soft like a Rowan

I see these quite often. If this piece was ever broken, it was reworked. However, I'm pretty sure yours is not a reworked point. I can't call the name of these off the top of my head. I'll check a book that I have, and post again, hopefully with the name of these. Oh, yeah... I'm not sure that your second piece is a geofact either. At the same time, I can't call it an artifact. Let's see a few more angles of that one!!

Looks like the tips broken like this quartz point from North Carolina.
( thanks BP) if those other pieces show Polish and use wear on the end and Mabey some from hands ..they have the shape of pestle's

Thanks NC. I don't think it's been reworked. It just looks like it got a lot of use. Still on the fence with the other one. The main reason I think it's an artifact is because of where it was found.
If its not too much trouble I'd be interested in what you find out. Ill take more pics.

Wow. That really looks like mine. Thanks for sharing.

Cool to see someone else from Virginia finding stuff!

Nick - welcome to the site and good to see another Richmond hunter out there. I think your point is a resharpened stemmed point that probably predates the bow and arrow. More likely is that it's an atl-atl dart point that resharpened down to the nub. Cool find.

Joe

Looks like your on a good start. I do not agree with the term ''Bird Point'', the smaller points that a lot are calling ''Bird Points'' are actually ''Bow and Arrow'' pojectile points. These small points, when hafted to the arrow shaft are very capable of killing deer and elk, and even buffalo. Thousands of these smaller points have been found with the skeletons of buffalo that were killed in hundreds of Buffalo Jumps (Pishkun's). Birds were caught in traps (nets), or killed with rocks.

Very true and correct.
It's all about placement.

On the point, do you have Hardaway's in your area? Looks like a worn down one.

I have a piece, similar to what you are calling a pestle, from MO that I'm confident is an artifact. It is very smooth but has a perfect circular depression with what looks like peck marks within the depression. The one I just posted reminds of the MO piece because or the feel. Ill post the MO one this week.
