That was a very interesting program. I liked the farmers answer to questions about all the digging in his field.

"They're looking for a body"

THAT'S a new one..

Add it to: Have you ever found anything ?

.

'Mister, what kinda weedwhacker is that?"
"Is that a geiger counter?"
"Look at that poor guy looking for change"
"It's another one of those creepy guys that digs up parks"
"You striking it rich, buddy?"

He said that to hide the fact that the Archy's were digging up the field, they were afraid that because the site was very close to a well known road, it would attract night hawkers, if they seen the Archy's working there.
I still think the finder and the farmer were short changed, although they recieved £3.75 million between them, the BM now are trying to raise another £7 million to research it.

I got one that was asked of me as I was hiking back to a late 1700s mill buried in the woods next to a waterfall.

"You guys going back to measure the falls?...oh, I know what you're doing"

I watched it last night and very interesting. It mentioned that he made modifications to the detector than what the detector came with. I wonder what type of mods he made with it, what model Whites he used, etc?

Very interesting story. I find it almost hard to believe that the farmer didn't notice any of it for the many years he has been plowing it, unless he just grew hay there, which doesn't really need any plowing to grow.

I think they got offered and took the money they did rather than negotiating what it was really worth. If one is poor and offered a substantial amount of money and be somewhat wealthy, even 1.85 million each is better than living with what you have before you found it. Of course, maybe they though about if they negotiated more, the government might come in and take it all and leave you with nothing. After all, that has happened to some who have found treasures, especially when one has to hire legal staff to fight to keep what you found which in turn costs more money.

I would bet there is a lot more buried there. I would certainly take part of that money and build a big fence and have some mean guard dogs around and dig up every inch of the whole property, then negotiate on my terms if I found anything else. just M.O.

I watched it last night.both men came out with over1.6 mil, yea looking for a body lol

The Government couldn't have come in and took it, it belonged to the Farmer, who was the land owner, and the Guy that found it, who had permission from said farmer. They could have refused the offer and had another meeting from the valuation commitee, and it would not have cost anything but time.

1.6 million british pounds is about 2.45 million US dollars.

Not bad if you consider how many governments would just take it
with out compensation.

Amen! I think that Great Britain has it right. Many governments just take the stuff so it ends up disappearing on the black market instead of being turned in. Since GB pays you for it and makes it a law you are more compelled to do the right thing and make sure it ends up in a museum. The government doesn't want to lowball you for fear that others will catch wind and stop turning stuff in so they have to give you a "reasonable" offer.

I think that $5M USD is a pretty reasonable offer. The gold itself wasn't worth much to speak of in terms of melt value and all of the pieces were pretty much busted. There were a few good ones but if they had tried to offer them on the open market very few people would have ponied up a lot of dough for such twisted and broken junk. They would have made good money but not much more than the amount they were probably offered. And they really could have ended up with less. They also got that money tax free!

Not a bad bit of work for someone who otherwise would have eventually passed from this earth without any fanfare to speak of. He made a small fortune and got his name placed in the annals of history. I'd take that any day of the week!

And thanks for pointing out this show. I really enjoyed it.

I watched this last night. Although they don't go into details I think the mods he made were just a custom setting he set. I don't think he actually did any customizing to the actual electronics. They showed him with a White's Vision which I think they changed the name to Spectra V3 but I believe he actually used a Whites Spectrum XLT to make the find.

I agree completely, UK is doing a great job partnering with the detectorists.

Yeah, I thought it was neat that they let him help out with the rest of the dig. They could have gotten anybody or simply kicked him out. But they clearly were working with him and were very grateful. I also thought the little side story about the "night hawks" was interesting. And they clearly see the usefulness of "good" detectorists despite the fact that there are quite a few "evil" ones out there.
