Saddled up really early Saturday morning with three other members of the Wild Bunch, Dave, Brad, & Steve, to make the 3+ hour drive to our CW Era Honeyhole. Apparently, something was right with the conditions because Eagle buttons and old silver coins were hot today. Found a Kepi Hat Button, another partial Jeff Davis Eagle Pin, and...

I found this 1854-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar (my first) plus many other cool CW Era Relics. I believe this is my oldest American coin find so far.

Had a Super day with my friends, and they did quite well also.

Congrats on the awesome find!

Fantastic find and in wonderful condition.
Please excuse my ignorance on coins but were they cast when made? looks like flashing between the letters and stars.

Someone else just brought that to my attention on another forum where I posted. I have been so out of it since I made the find, I hadn't even noticed the cracked Die marks.

From Wikipedia:

Die crack[edit]

A die crack occurs when a die, after being subjected to immense pressure during the minting process, cracks, causing a small gap in the die.[SUP][3][/SUP] If this damaged die cointinues to produce coins, the metal will fill into the crack, thus revealing a raised line of metal in the finished coin. Specimens with more prominent die cracks can command a high premium and are valued greatly by some collectors

This link provides another good description of what happens to a coin during minting when there is a cracked Die.

Looks like you will have to copy and paste the link to get it to work.
