The other day I was out looking for Quartz and came across a big Metate. I took a pic of it with me cell but cant upload from my cell. I was wondering what you would do if you found something like this? It was 3ft L and about 12 inches wide and about .75 thick made from Schist. It looked really heavy and I was down probably 100 ft from my truck on a rocky hill. No way I can carry that thing up that hill. I found it in the spot where I found this Pestle. It is made from the same type of stone as pictured. Now the Pestle is small to me compared to the Metate but I guess they could of used it. When I washed the Pestle it was covered in red clay and at the end the clay preserved the end where it was used and you can still see the berries stain they were crushing with it. This is the first and only Pestle I have ever found. I found it about 3 months ago. If you have any ideas as to what to do with the Metate as far as what would you do Id like to hear it.
Thanks, rock

Haha.. Is there some reason you wish they would stay where they are or something? It sounds like it actually bothers you. Now I know I'm the one bothering you... but I'm used to being that Guy.

You aren't bothering me Gator. I'm just kidding around. It's just my nature. Even when I'm dead serious, I'll keep a light edge on the subject at hand. About the moving of large artifacts, well, it does sort of tip the scales for me. If a piece can be removed with no harm being done, fine. The one that the fellas above have, I would have brought it home, no doubt. However, a piece that is huge and has remained in its same spot, it's context, I disagree with moving. I disagree unless modern changes of the land are about to cause destruction of the piece. Then it should be moved. I'm not sure why this one thing bothers me, but it does. I know of one bolder sized artifact along a creek on our farm. It looks like it was a mediate, nutting stone, cutting stone, pretty much equivalent to all of our kitchen appliances today. To sit on that rock, and watch the creek run, made me realize as a kid that those two belonged to each other.

I completely understand that. Thanks.

You boy's sure do talk the smack ,..:laughing7:
But ,. I'd have to agree with NC fild hunther here ,. some thing's should best be left alone . That said this "area" has many badrock mortars ,.. some slabs have better then a dozon holes in 'em . Also,. this area has had a road & small pad "pushed" out of it's middle ,. it's this area of disturbance that is best area to look around . I'm sure this metate was out of context ,. and but a small bump in the road ,. wait'n for the next blade to come along . If this metate was out in the "undisturbed" area ,. would have been nothing more then a Kodak moment ,. maybe at that ?
I've found up to seven metate's in a day at this ranch after clear'n been done ,. this is the biggest one I've bothered with ,. which really doen't have much of a hole in it anyway ,. out here in Cali , it's all about the size of the hole ,. not the rock that it's in .
Gatorboy ,.. Yep,. one shot onto the tailgate ,.. one shot is all this Ol' pig is worth !!

Thats a nice one blindpig. I have only found one with a dimple on it in 3 yrs. What is the type that looks concaved like a roller pin could of been used on it called? Is it saddle mortar? I saw one and left it where I found it cause it was large also and looked on line and somebody called it a saddle quern. This makes 2 I have found in different areas and left both of them. They are just heavy looking and would be hard to carry.

Here ya go Digger... "show us some real artifacts!" That better? LOL. That probably should have been all that was needed.

Gator, I was not trying to be cynical! I thought that since you and NC are really not that far from Rock (possibly a couple hundred miles apart), you could get together and get that rock out. With all the rough terrain, the possible best and easyest way would be to aliveate the weight with a small hot air ballon. Each of you have a rope and guide that sucker up and out of that canyon. Nothing wrong with trying to suggest a possible way of helping Rock ge it out. In the mean time you guys could get to know each other in person.

I like it.

I still think that "pestle" is a piece of natural fossil wood like what was said when Rock had it in the fossil forum. Good luck y'all. "Later" ..better days and better....

Hot air.. haha

They liked to use fossil wood for tools. I believe it is pect wood also but was used for a pestle

All right fellows. Not what this is about. Lets steer it back to artifacts and not chest pounding.

Nope I am getting ready to clean the whole thing. I just got in and this happens. If you see your post gone re think it and feel free to post again. Keep it civil. We all have strong opinions and that is fine but we are not going to act like a bunch of little kids.

Just my opinion, but after blowing it up 400% it looks alful rough on the end to be a metate, doesn't seem smooth enough to have been used... It matches the sides in texture......

I'm glad you understand. It's like a fishing weir in a river. I know where 3 if them are, but they just would not be as remarkable in my yard. Not being a smart ... But it wouldn't. I really wish that analogy had of hit me earlier. Then Gator, you would have probably seen that I had nothing aimed against you. Sorry that it came off that way. Lol! You know I'm not the type to strike nerves for the heck of it!

i agree with you on that
due to the high quality of the image and seeing a very clear picture at 400% it does not appear to have been used as one at all
JM 2 cents

So I have to ask then. What is the red stain on the bottom of it? It was preserved by the mud. The mud is not that color. Maybe it was used to grind stones for paint?
