Wow! I just found this about an hour ago. This is my first big Barber. I have been going on short hunts after work but the sun sets so early now that as soon as I get swinging its near dark and I can't read the vdi, depth, etc... Tonight I kept on detecting "old school" with just my ears. At first I felt naked with out the visual info but then more comfortable. The location was my Grandmothers home that I have been working for the last 3-4 years as a fall back when nothing else was available. It gives and gives but slowly. The last signal of the night was big and iffy, but when pinpointed, I could hear two signals that were close but separate. Dig? Go Home? Should Dig. Probably a darn pipe. Probably a 199 vdi at 10+ inches. Wish I could see the bloody screen. Well, just one more hole. I got down 5-6" and the signal was still in the hole. I kept scooping then sweeping the hole (no pinpointer yet) and still the signal stayed in the hole. OK last scoop than I'm filling it in. Silent hole.... I quickly feel around on the top of the dirt pile and I find a big disc. Off I go running for the house and enough light to see what I have. Finding this coin in the dark made it even more memorable. PS. The fine scratches are not from Field cleaning but rather from being scooped out of the hole undetected. I'm also amazed that I didn't doink it with my digger. hh blue

That's why I don't even turn my disc. knob on my machine now. It's more of a surprise to just beep/dig. :) And it keeps me more careful in the digging--because I don't know what any signal is. ;D

Well done! I'll bet that hunk of silver was a GREAT surprise when light glimmered off of it for the first time in years.

oh wow! I have hit 3 silver halves in 17 years of hunting..... the 3rd was last week.... 2 walkers and a franklin... never dug even a Barber quarter.. not many barber dimes here either....... you have done very well..... I like the XLT it has a backlight feature that lets you see the screen in the dark....... congrats on some nice silver... i like the "O" mintmarks...... digs like this are why we all hunt.. even at dark LOL

Hi, there, Cobalt Blue,

Iwas just looking at your find. I think it looks good for as how old it is. I am still new to this coin hunting. Why is
it called a barber? What is it that makes it a barber?

Thank you BuckleBoy. I think I'm getting to lazy and passing on way to many signals lately. This Dark Digg'n reset my priorities - dig more and think less!

I have found 3 Walkers and now the Barber but still looking for a Franklin. Never found a SLQ or a Barber Quarter. Some day I hope to upgrade my machine and a backlighted screen will be on the list of wanted features.

Hi karenray08,
The dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar all featured this Obverse design that was created by Charles Barber (who was also the US Mint Engraver at the time). The series started in 1892 and ran untill all three denomination were changed in 1916. hh blue

That's the way it should be! I always dig more--in fact, I dig just about everything. Because if I don't dig it, what are the chances that it'll ever get dug?

I also like to think less in the field--and rely on intuition more.

I'll echo what minton said up above. I have 3 silver halves in 16 years of hunting: A Seated, a Barber, and a Walker. Savor the moment. :)

Congrats on the nice big Barber!!

I thing Barbers are great looking coins, and I like them even more than standings. Nice half!! :)

Now reward yourself with an LED flashlight...

Nice Barber half! Congrats!
I guess you're happy that you kept digging now!
Hope you filled that hole back in. Don't want grandma fallin' in. :o :-[
Sweet coin! Good luck, and H.H.!

I hate to let you all know this, But I have dug over 100 halves in 49 years of hunting, I would say that only a handful were barbers. My personal best day was 17 halves in 12 hours of hunting. The area of a park that I got them is WAY to Dangerous to even think about going there anymore, even if yer friends go with ya, packin' heat. You are just too way outgunned :o! Most if not all of them were walkers. I can still go to certain areas of this park and get halves, but my knees complain when I work hillsides. Congratulations on your Half ......NGE
