With the recent posting of what looks like Chinese counterfeit coins I remembered I had some coins stashed away the I got in China. My wife and I took a trip to China back in 2014. I bought some US silver dollars while there. The first batch I saw looked good and I was able to get them for what I thought was a good price. I had an old flip phone and no internet connection so I couldn’t check them until we got back to the river boat we were on and the WiFi connection on my iPad. After I looked them up I knew they were counterfeit. I did buy a couple more at a very reduced price just for the variety and the souvenir value.

As we toured around I noticed they were everywhere. So I can only guess how many people got taken in and how many of these people tried to sell once they got home. So be careful what you buy, you might be getting a Chinese counterfeit instead of the real deal.

I’m no expert and people with more knowledge of silver dollars will spot more problems with the coins, but here they are with the things I can see that makes them counterfeit.

These dollars all have In God We Trust and are marked CC for the Carson City mint. In God We Trust did not appear on coins until 1864 when they put it on the 2 cent piece. Also the Carson City mint didn’t operate until 1870 and all these are dated well before that.

The trade dollar is the right year, but on the real one there is a ribbon with LIBERTY on it being held in lady liberty’s hand. It is missing on this one.

The Morgan dollars look good to me. I’m sure there are some irregularities, but I haven’t spotted them. One of them is definitely a counterfeit because the plating has split in several places and the under metal is showing through.

Most of the coins have a stain on them that makes the coins look dirty like they are old. To me the staining does not look right for old silver coins. Also it does not come off using the normal methods of cleaning silver coins, another indicator that these are counterfeit. Beware of coins for sale that could be Chinese counterfeits. Don’t be fooled like I was. It didn’t cost me too much and now I know a lot more than I did then.

Thanks for looking, stay safe, good luck and keep swingin.

I have a couple also. I used to do missionary trips with my church and have been to quite a few places overseas. I was also a combat vet in the Air Force and have been overseas in the middle east for that.
While we were in the Philippines we were traveling to one of the locations we were serving, someone jumped up on the bus to sell stuff. They sold food, drinks, etc. and I bought a couple of them. I knew they were fake because I've been collecting coins my whole life. You can tell by the weight. I usually try to get foriegn coins where ever I went. Crazy times overseas seeing what people actually have to endure to survive.
Thanks to you and all the others for the interesting replies. I want to address the last line of your post. I have traveled the world and been on all 7 continents. Most people don’t know how very very lucky we are. There are a lot of countries where many people struggle daily to survive. I thank God everyday for the things we have and hope that we do our best to make things better for those less fortunate. Thanks for looking, stay safe, good luck and keep swingin.

I beg to differ. Luck has very little to do with America and our way of life. Our ancestors fought and died to keep our country and it's values. We had founders that knew the wrong way of doing things, and had the vision of what it should be like. As for helping others that need it? Sure, but, do it in the right way by showing them how, not by buying their counterfeit junk that just encourages them to make more of it. Buy something truly hand made, or, at least original and not a fake of something already made by someone else. Give them money or food if they're actually starving, but, in the long run, they need to get a skill and select leaders who will allow everyone to prosper under more favorable conditions.

the vision yes, but it took a war or two to accomplish that vision. I can't remember where I heard it but I like the idea... "America was the best idea ever, it just isn't there yet"... but we always get better, two steps forward, one step back...

Really? I've been to places overseas where people sleep on dirt floors and have their chickens living in their huts and sleep with them so they don't get stolen. I've walked into homes where parents have told me they don't want their daughters and to take them back to the United States with us. I've seen what starvation has done to people. I've seen people whose only water supply is a well that frogs swim in. I've been to villages with no water, no electricity, and no contact with the outside world amenities. I've spent lots of time overseas helping these people and by doing things to help make their lives better. I've been to China, Japan, South Korea, Nicaragua, Mexico, England, Spain, Oman, and Saudi Arabia and have been to the poorest places in these countries. Some of the church members were sponsors to one of the kids and brought them some toys etc and the kid said "what am I going to do with this stuff" because they were overwhelmed with it. You have no idea what it is like out there and I've been there first hand and dealt with it. Its pretty crazy when we went to the Manila Cathedral. There must have been at a minimum of 50 kids that came up to us begging for money. I've seen some really sick things out there. People prostituting their kids to survive. Pretty easy to sit in your comfy home and blow smoke up people's asses when you you have an opinion but unless you've actually been there to see what it's like and helped people to survive and have become the change for better in the world you have no idea.

I've also spent 2 years as a chef in a homeless shelter in the USA. I've seen people so stoned out of there minds they could barely stand up in the food line to get a meal. A lot of the homeless would sleep outside during the night because they didn't want to stay in the shelters because they couldn't bring a pet in or they had to be sober to stay there. Ive arrived at the shelter and it just blows your mind to see people sleeping outside with blankets on covered in snow. One morning a girl came into the shelter for help because her boyfriend shot her in the face and you could see the bullet hole
We had to call the police for her. Another one had a crack pipe blow up in his face. They guy asked me if it looked bad and I told him I was going to call the paramedics for him and he took off because he was afraid he would get arrested. I've seen lots of mentally ill people there too. I've also seen good people there. One of the people was a nurse who lost everything. She was a trauma nurse in a emergency room. She said she had a really hard time because of the stuff she had seen. She eventually started drinking to deal with it because the hospital didn't have a resource to help her deal with her job. She got pulled over for DUI and lost her license and her job. I do not condone driving under the influence but there should be a program or something to help people deal with trauma.
I've also heard stories from other church members who went to Haiti and brought lots of food for the Haitians and the warlords of the country refused to give the food out because they wanted bribes so they let the food rot instead of giving it out.
I'd have to disagree with you as far as lucky. I think a better word would be spoiled. I think that is what the poster meant. The pictures below are of how it would be when I would get to the shelter to cook. So long story short, if I buy a couple of counterfeit coins so that someone can put food on the table because of it I'm more then happy to do it. You worry about yourself and what you spend your money on.

I do agree with you about "give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish and he eats the rest of his life". When I said it's easy to have a opinion I mean as far as the general society. People have no idea what life is like outside of the US because they've never been anywhere. They think every thing overseas is like in the US. It's a ethnocentric view of the world. Takes a trip to see what it's really like out there. Granted since it's missionary work I see the worst of the worst as far as how people live but you also see the resilience in people and them wanting to thrive and people working together for the common good of their village. I think as long as we can leave a mark on the world and make it a better place that it's a good thing to strive for. One day hopefully we figure out how to make the world a better place for everyone. Wow all this from counterfeit Chinese coins lol

This is great conversation and needs its own thread

Sorry, but, all this do-gooder, well intentioned charity does nothing, but enable them to continue with their hand out and produce another generation of the same. Instead of all this temporary, feel-good aid which doesn't take tomorrow into account, the root of the problem needs to be addressed. In many cases, that means a change in leadership by whatever means possible. As for our "homeless" problem.....the only ones I feel for are the mentally ill. The rest are there by their own poor choices. Homelessness is the result, not the problem. Giving them housing will only perpetuate the problem and allow them to continue being a bum with no incentive to get off their drugs. Help is available to those willing to follow the rules to accept it. And yes, I've done some travelling in the world, maybe not as many hell holes as you have been, but, poverty areas none-the-less. Their problem is lack of opportunity inflicted on them from their leaders, not their lack of desire to improve their lives. Sure, the immediate need is food and shelter, but, the future is what they really need to address or they will never escape their fate and all this aid is for naught.

most of those folk do have an underlying mental or physical health concern. A big part of the problem is that access to (mental) health care is so limited, folks can't even get a proper diagnosis. Add to this is the fact that often times these sorts of problems don't manifest themselves until late teens and early 20's. You can't fix something that is broken until you know why it is broken. And there is no "one size fits all" solution.

As long as there are no more political posts thread can continue.

Treasure Hunting NM, my wife is Filipino born, naturalized American citizen, been to Philippines 6 or 7 times and use to live in Okinawa before it was returned to Japan. I have seen extreme poverty, but that doesn't mean we should buy counterfeit coins, that are then resold to unsuspecting buyers.

So we should just ignore homeless vets, elderly and the handcapped people in this country? How about all the people who lost their homes in the LA fires? Ignore them and don't give them any "hand outs"? That's not right and you should know that.

I'm not a religious person, but I live by this credo every day of my life. "There but for the grace of God, go I." If someone asks me for a couple of bucks, I give it to them. I've given homeless people blankets, jackets and even gift cards because it's the right thing to do. I've never earned more than 50k in one year and some years I've made less than 20k, so I'm definitely not well off. But I've never gone hungry and always had a home to live in, so I'm better off than a lot of people in my area. The very least I can do is help a few people in this world.

One of my favorite Skynyrd songs. Ronnie Van Zant was a kind soul and a very religious person who put it all in perspective in this song...
