My grandfather bought our family farm in 1949. He quit the mines and moved into the 4 room house on the place with his 2nd wife, new born daughter and teenage son. They had very little income coming in and knew hard times. He talked how they barely made it thru some of those early winters. Several years after moving in, tragedy struck, his wife got sick and died and hard times got tougher.

Life got easier for them in the early 60’s. after he received his SS. He remarried, had a well drilled, and electric run to the house. He added a bathroom and a kitchen on the farmhouse. That’s the home place I remember from my childhood. My grandfather was fun loving, hard working and a great man. He was 87 when he died in 1987.

I’ve detected many hours around the place and have found 1 penny. He wasn’t one to lose what little he had. I bought the farm about 10 years ago from my aunts and begin to clean up the old house that had sat vacant since 1987. In the bathroom was a thick glass mirror inside a chestnut frame. When I removed it from the wall, I noticed the back was cardboard that looked out of place. It had writing on it from a box. I opened the back and it revealed six $50 bills. As excited as I was to find them, I also wanted to cry. I can only imagine how much they could have used that cash during those hard years. How many times did he look into that mirror never knowing that money was behind it. I’m thinking his 2nd wife stashed it there. When she passed, the secret passed with her.

I’d appreciate display suggestions. I’m thinking of reusing the frame. I do not want to leave these bills laying in a safe. They’ve been in the dark long enough.

Nice story. Like the cash.

Why dont you get a frame made that's wide enough to have a painting of the property painted on it,use two pieces of glass to mount the bills between. In the frame.

Thank you for sharing! :icon_thumleft:

Use the frame but take out the mirror and replace it with clear or slightly tinted glass. Put black cardboard in place behind the bills. Imagine seeing the bills through the glass as if you see through the mirror as you described your Grandfather might. Great to keep in the family. I often think about buying back my homestead just for the memories.

Perhaps he put them there himself...for a rainy day. Cool find, and nice old bills.

Cool discovery. Considering their age, it would probably be worth having the bills evaluated by a reputable collector. It could add a little more info to the back story or it may add a little more mystery. Keep us posted...

Thanks for the suggestions. I like the semi reflecting mirror that you can see the bills behind idea. If I can pull it off. As far as whether my grandfather was the one who hid them there for a rainy day. Anything is possible but its doubtful. They lived thru more than rainy days in the 1950's. They lived thru a monsoon. I wont get into details but they almost didnt make it a couple winters. Now later in life, he had his stash but he knew where it was. He kept his cash cold. Hid it in the bottom of his chest freezer. He had me fetch it for him several times late in his days to go buy something for him at the store.

very cool, people hid money everywhere. sometimes the hid it too well and couldn't remember where it was or died so no one got it. True treasure that is yours but I would be careful about displaying them to the "public".

Frame it with a picture of your Grandfather saying it wasnt the money that kept us together it was the man heres the proof great story what a piece of family history

Interesting that there is 3 old and 3 newer. Interesting story behind it I’m sure.
Probably 6 weeks of take home pay for the average hard worker.

thats what I was thinking, at least 6 weeks pay and I doubt they paid their workers in $50 bills. He must have sold something to someone with big money for those days

I find it curious also that 3 were well worn 1934 series and 3 pretty crisp 1950 series. If you notice on the one 1950 bill, 300 is written on it. So it appears they went behind it together. My first thought when I found them was the mirror was in the farmhouse when they bought it and no one in my family put it there. But they bought it and moved there in 1949 so that shoots down that theory. It seems they were put there not long after 1950 since those bills are in such good shape.
