Absolutely, the top selling unit would not also be the best detector, not even close.
Price point is what makes them top selling, and oogles of features is what makes the best detectors very expensive.

There would be more closet bound Aces simply by virtue of the fact that there are so many out there - I have upgraded but still use it all the time as it is the one I keep in my truck year round, so I use it whenever the mood strikes. The Deus I only take it out specifically when I know I am going to detect [usually a hot spot found with the Ace]

My guess for the top selling detector of all time would be the Garrett Ace 250. Yes I bought one.

My first detector was a Garrett DeepseekerADS III in '82 or '83 - I need to look at my receipts from those years to pin it down (Yes I still have the receipts!).

I purchased a White's 6000D in 1983 or 4 after getting walloped at a seeded group hunt, that hard fast swing wore me out! Then I purchased the Fisher 1260X which I still have.

And when I returned to the hobby the first detector I purchased was an Ace250. Gave that to my cousin pretty quickly and then bought an Etrac.
