Re: Best of 2008 - Think my season ended today

About the "Dublin slap"...

Gregory G. Brunk's Merchant & Privately Countermarked Coins confirms this as a term used to denote coins, tokens, etc. which were countermarked by merchants for use in trade during shortages of crown coinage in Ireland. (See p. 54.) He adds that the various marks (initials, puffin's head, and other symbols) served the same purpose as Chinese "chop marks" on trade coins, denoting a merchant's approval or authentication of the coin as genuine silver.

Thanks. That's no doubt where the person who told me got the term from, he is big into stamped coins and without doubt would own a copy of the Brunk book/s.

I have searched for the latest book many times on Ebay and never a listing. Guess I will have to look elsewhere to get a copy.

Tried Rich Hartzog at World Exonumia? He's the publisher and offers a $10 discount.

Yes, have seen it there from Google searches but find it much easier to by books off the E.

Thanks, will probably try him sometime soon.

IP:

Although my season does not end until December 31, the day before my new season starts , I don't think any of my finds will ever come close to your totally awesome finds!

Good luck to you in your next season of detecting!

Well Iron, You're doing great!

I'm 6'2" and 285 and I'll arm wrestle with yah, down a few pints, and see if I can coax that GREAT location out of you!

We don't get too much like those good finds out here in the west. Not to say there are none, just far and few between! I've got good information on old sites, but not near as old as yours.

Great pics and all!
Thanks for posting!
