Hello everyone,

I am trying to find the best option for a metal detector that can be used on a beach and also used underwater in lakes. Will be used occasionally at ocean beaches but mostly at lake beaches and underwater swimming holes. Ive been thinking about the Garrett Sea Hunter but thought i would ask on here to see what opinions others may have.

thanks,
Mike

I have a Minelab Sovereign Elite and just picked up a Minelab X-Terra Elite. The Sovereign is no longer made but it's a beast on beaches, whether on dry or wet sand or even into salt water. It's an SMF detector (simultaneous multi-frequency) but is older BBS technology. So, it's great for the beach and wet sand but isn't waterproof.

But the new Minelab X-Terra Elite is current digital technology, is also a SMF detector as it transmits multiple frequencies simultaneously via its Multi-IQ technology, so works great at the beach & salt water. It's also waterproof to 16ft so you can use for underwater lake/swimming holes. If you plan on searching saltwater beaches, where the mineralization in the sand and saltwater can make a single frequency pretty much unusable, you really need to be using an SMF detector. Even if you'll primarily be searching freshwater beaches, lakes, swimming holes, you can't go wrong with an SMF, especially if there will be occasions where you plan to use at a saltwater beach.

Depending on how much you want to spend, I'd recommend looking at the Minelab X-Terra Elite Expedition Pack, or the Minelab Equinox 700 or 900. They're all in the same detector "family", all waterproof to 16ft, you just get more features as you move up in price from the X-Terra Elite to the NOX 700 & 900 detectors.

How deep do you plan on diving Excalibur is a great underwater machine. It’s an older Detector been around for quite a while. I am going to purchase a 900 Knox for my 10-year-old. It can go in the water, but not too deep. Also can hunt in the dirt Newer technology and much lighter. Never played around with the sea Hunter
I have heard it’s a good machine

DEUS II or MINELAB both go underwater both are excellent for multi use

Look at the Minelab Equinox series. I have an 800 that I'm going to offer for sale to benefit MD4V.org

How deep you plan to dive is key here. 10' or less.....Minelab 700/900, and Nokta Legend will work fine. A little deeper and you can add the XP Deus 2, and for deep diving, the Minelb Excalibur or Fisher CZ21. These are VLF discriminating machines that can handle salt water. If you don't need/want discrimination and are willing to dig EVERYTHING, the Sea Hunter fills that bill, although not the best PI machine out there. They really isn't much in the way of great PI machines for sale new these days. The J.W. Fisher 6X and 8X are tried and true for serious shipwreck hunting, but, are fairly expensive for what you get. Same with Aquascan machines. IMO, you'd be much happier with the Excalibur or CZ21.

I hunt freshwater creeks mostly, occasional trip to the beach. My usual hunts are wading to diving depths of about 10 feet. Have used the Equinox 800, Tesoro Tiger Shark (no longer made) and for the last couple of years the Excaliber. The Excaliber is great for underwater use, but I have kinda missed the type of convenience of the equinox for what I do. From deep holes out of a kayak to wading or land hunting with the same detector. I have recently switched to the Deus 2 and began the process of learning it. So far I have done a bit of wading in creeks and dirt hunting with it. Once it warms up enough to leave the waders behind I will take it underwater and see how it goes. Very impressed by it so far and really looking forward to summer. Holding on to the Excaliber, but love the idea of doing it all with the Deus 2.

Sea Hunter might be the easiest PI's to use, Also maybe the weakest as far as depth, it is built like a tank. Bad about a PI, one is limited to where it can be used, Not a multi-purpose machine, unless you like to be tortured. I have a couple Pi's, I love but would not recommend them to anyone.

There are several machines that could fill your needs, D2. Manticore, Nox's. Each to me have things I don't like. Heck, I have things about the machines I use that I don't like, but I have changed them to fit my likings.

As far as recommending, I'm going to say the Nox 900.... only because I have a friend does well with his.
