I wanted to share if you already did not find it a very helpful tool. Historicmapworks.com It will allow you to overlay historic maps over todays maps
it is awesome, I hunted along a road in the woods that existed in 1840's that is not there today ( 1 indian, 2 V nicks, I sterling ring) pretty cool check it out

Also, I recently found out that if you use Google Earth, there is a timeline function that will let you adjust the current view to as far back as there was satellite image for that area. At least for that program anyways...the county I live in only went back to 1998. I haven't played around with it much but I'm sure other areas can go back earlier...might find older homesteads that have since been torn down.

Edit: It is a feature called Historical Imagery. I looked at Galveston, TX and it goes back to 1954.

That's where I do all of my map research! I found over 600 no longer existing buildings in my county (mostly houses schools and mills) that should keep me busy for a long time! I strongly recommend this site!
