Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I was at the largest city park in Charlotte, N.C. and had spent most of the morning hunting the lawn seats where they show movies once a week. I usually find enough change to buy a 32oz drink and a pack of crackers, and get a lot of excercise. So, anyhoo, When I got ready to go back to the car and wrap it up for the day, I decided to stop by the swings and kids climbing area. I was digging a few dimes nickels and pennies when these little fellows that were with their moms came walking over. I gave them the usual speal on what I was doing, and that it was fun, and asked if they wanted to help? I told them whatever change they dug while we were hunting there they could keep. They agreed and followed me around the play area. I was hitting a lot of pennies and hairbands when I got a really good "ping" about 6 inches deep. One of the boys dove in and popped out a sterling silver Lilly Pulitzer pendant that weighed about an ounce. Running over to his mother he was shouting "Wow mommy, look what I found with the metal detector man!!" The mom looked at it and with with South Charlotte mom amazement, she exclaimed "Why that's like the one daddy bought mommy at Seabrook Island last year, he paid a lot of money for it!!" "Well, here, now you have two!" was the boys reply. And with not so much as a "thank the nice sweaty man", or "oh, you should give that back", she opened her Prada hand bag, dropped it in and continued talking to her identical friend Muffy about where they were going to spend too much money eating lunch.
The kid did seem pretty excited though, maybe after he retires someday from being a lawyer or doctor like "dad-dy" he'll remember the fun and get himself a detector. ;)

i have faked a good signal, then silently walked away, when i encounter snotty kids.........
i get a nice little laugh........when i see em digging selfishly..........but i wouldn't do that to the nice kids........i usually just leave when the kids show up.......

I tell the little kids they get all pennies, but anything else I have to check first. I had one try to grab a gold ring I dug up once, I stopped him with a NO!

I wear a headset, and point to it and say, sorry I can't hear you most of the time.

Yup, gotta luv the manner less people these days....

I stopped going to one park because of a kid that lives next to it. Every time I was there, he comes outs and follows me around saying that I won't find anything, and when I do find coins, he jumps right in and trys to grab it, saying it was his and he lost it yesterday.... I want to shove my foot so far up his you know what....

Oh, now here's some fun waiting to happen. How much is a tarantula in a pet store? About the time he's diving I'd be transferring it from the baggie or jar in my finds sack to down the back of his shirt.

"There's another one! Man, I hate it when then things jump out of the holes."

Or,

"Cat shit? Too bad you got that all over your hands. Folks ought not to let them into parks to do that."

Or,

"Oooo. That's got to hurt. Sorry your hand got under my coin probe."

Or,

"Nope. Just more fish hooks and razor blades. Say, you ought to get some iodine on that."

I think I would have asked for it back too. Don't mind giving up a coin or two, but jewerly is not for the giving. Especially if the kid AND mother were rude! Lesson learned, but a nice thing to do except they keep coming back. I have headphones and just don't hear very well!!

Bummer, I feel your pain over the loss of that silver stunner.

Earlier this month I was on vacation, and stayed a night or two in Idaho. I called the local PD one evening to inquire about the legality of metal detecting at the city park and was told "no problem" so the next morning, bright and early, I was out in the sand and the bark, looking for treasures. Lo and behold, several young boys show up and follow me around. I've got on my headphones and try to ignore them, but they were persistant little rascals. So I use a ploy I learned here on TNet, I tell them I'm clearing the beach and play area of bombs. Well, that made them even more curious and they asked even more questions. I then told them that they should be careful because the last time I did this in their town, a bomb exploded and took off the lower part of my right leg. Now they wanted to see my artificial leg (which I don't have, thank God!). So I packed up my gear, headed to the truck, and vowed never to tell the bomb squad story again. From now on, I'm sticking to my tried and true story -- I collect pulltabs.

"..I'm sticking to my tried and true story -- I collect pulltabs."
TT,
I loved that part!!
I always said that it would be my luck that if I ever used the bomb story, that one of the kids would run home, tell the parents, the parents would call the police, and the police would respond...........putting me in the pokey for insinuating a bomb threat. :o :o :o And then I would have to explain to my wife how I needed bond money to bail me out of jail....LOL ;D ;D

Sorry about your luck. I always wear a headset whenever I'm detecting. I've heard kids say, when they ask me what I'm finding and I don't reply, Oh he's wearing a headset and he can't hear you. Yeah Right!, But you know what it works.

I usually just ignore them and they go away. If they walk with me, I change directions, or just leave the area for awhile and go back later.

I guess that's why I love relic hunting in a field. No kids, no adults, just me, my detector and a bright blue sky and great finds.

Good luck at your next hunt and Wear That HeadSet!!!!

HH, Ringfinder

Sorry you had to loose the silver, If I get kids that will not go away and are re digging and messing up my holes, I usually start working on a steep hill, or keep going in circles, or making 90 % turns until they get tired of that and leave. ;)

One other ploy I have used is to say the batteries on my detector are bad I have to change them. I go back to my car and mess around for a while until they clear out and then go back. If they don't leave I move to a different location. I am not like a lot of you, I don't mind losing pennies even newer coins wouldn't be a problem but anything else and I am not too happy about it.

Sorry for your lose and the rude lady. I wear headphones and usually ignore the kids. If I get a good signal I try look around an mark where I am at and come back later when kids have moved on. I have a bad back and cannot hunt for very long so I usually try not to entertain the kids. If they are persistant and keep following me then I leave and go somewhere else. Good luck on your future finds, HH Ted

Sorry to hear about your loss, that stinks! Last week I went to the beach, there was lots of people, lots of drops, and lots of garbage. I picked up the trash as I was going thinking the people are lazy especially since there are trash cans all over the place.
I picked up 3 mexican or spanish kids, they were around 10, 8 and maybe 5 yrs. old. They didn't speak much english except for the 8 yr. old. Anyway, they started to pick up the trash, and I really did appreciate it. So I gave them a dime each, and they got a lesson. I told them that the clear plastic bags were bad for the birds, the sea turtles think they are jellyfish, and that it will kill them because it gets in thier digestion track and blocks up everything The youngest kid was translating to the other 2. Thier eyes were like saucers. They followed me a good long way down the beach, and the parents never even called them back. Amazing to me. Hopefully they will remember me, and keep cleaning the trash. When I last saw them they were still picking up!, lol!
