Explorer XS/II & Garrett ACE 250
I'm looking to buy a new metal detector. I got into the hobby a few weeks ago with a BH 1100 and want something better. I want something that penetrates better, has discrimination and target ID. Doesn't have to be good at gold or relics.....I want something that has a reputation for coins. My price range is $150-200 on Ebay. What can I get with that very, very modest amount? I paid $50 for the 1100. The selection out there is tremendous and this rookie is going to resort to a BH 3300 if he can't come up with something else. :) Thanks in advance.

11/12: Based on responses to this post I'm convinced that the 250 is the right choice. Based on what has been said and what I have read.........

BH 3300: Better price. +
Haven't seen or heard to many good remarks about depth -
Sensitivity/Interference issues -
Target ID +

ACE 250: Reputed Coin finder. +
Most hands down recommendations. +
Am convinced this will have the better depth of the two +
Read a few little quirks about it -

Sounds like the ACE 250 is the one to get. In my opinion, it's a close call between the 250 and the 3300......if the 3300 can do what the specs say, plus, the 3300 has a nicer price. But something is telling me the ACE will have better depth penetration, and that is important to me. If I knew for sure that a BH 3300 could get down as far as a 250, I'd probably get steered towards it for the price. I'm actually willing to pay some more money, but don't want to get into a metal detector that is going to cost more because it is good at finding everything. I'm trying to narrow down to a coin hound.

the depth between the two will probably be a lot closer than you think. the real differance is going to be in overall quality. the garrett machine is a lot more sturdy and made of better parts. performance wise.......its almost a toss up.

Hollowhead makes a good point here. I was looking at the new BH's just today and I cant believe that plastic crap is still on the market, nor that it will hold up long. Sorry all you BH users. Taking into account only the coil, the Garrett has it hands down.

As for hunting in parks or anywhwere for that matter, I have grown to prefer the notch and cursor approach of the Garrett GTA as opposed to a little arrow pointer, like on the BH's. But then also Ive grown biased, having several Garretts. I have tried a few BH's but I never liked them for long.

I normally suggest you get both and try them, selling the one you dont like. But I wouldnt do that here:
The $200 Garret will resell for $150-175 all day long. I doubt a $200 BH will.

hollowhead?

Just messin with you, bro! ;)

no offense taken ;D...........god knows ive been called worse! ;) ;D

why hasn't anyone invented one of theese ? lol

I have seen Tesoro Golden's go for this price. Also, I have seen Xterra 30's as low as this. Both of these are great machines!

A Tesoro detector has a lifetime warranty...And that is a good thing...
I bought my Golden Sabre in 1986...and it was repaired for free in 2000.

I bought a Fisher in early 1990 and had to pay $50.00 for a minor repair.

Whatever you buy, better get it from a local dealer than from E-Bay.
That is my opinion.
