My brother in law came over for a visit. I took him to try his hand at MDing. He is not into history and never really has shown interest. After I got him set up and detecting I heard "hey I found something". He brought it over and it was a WW1 German medal. I have not found one yet. He was pretty stoked and I am happy that he has something to talk about. I found a few things but nothing as good. I did find a neat old ring but it was not silver or gold. Hope all is well and happy hunting. :)

I tried to get my inlaws to come out and hang around.
But they didn't like where I hung them. Go Figure.

That ring looks really old. Very nice finds!!! HH

I bet your brother inlaw is a history buff now and quite possibly an addict to this great hobby. That dated medal is awesome. The copper ring is a nice find, very unique. Some great digs there birdman. HH!

hey good job for your brother..... heck you might have some competition before too long. :) I have learnt one thing, you said your ring wasnt gold or silver....sometimes the uglest or wierdest find will be the one that you remember forever...it doesnt have to be silver or gold to be a great find....

Just what is that medal? I tried (extensively) to find one like it, but couldn't.

The medal is 1914 and has two hard to see bust standing side by side on it.I think one is the Kaiser. A good soaking will do it some good. He asked me if I wanted to keep it but of course I told him to keep his ultimate souvenir. :)

Cool finds, that Iron Cross is awesome! HH, Mike

Great find's birdman and to your brother in law as well.I probably wouldn't accept it either....Congrat's and HH!!

Hey Birdman, great finds.... I think that is the first iron cross medal I have seen on this site so far ;D keep up the good work.

God bless
Peter

I don't believe its technically an Iron Cross award medal, as the shape of the cross was a bit different (ever since its first introduction in 1813), and that award never had a bust/figure on it. But dang if I can figure out exactly what it is. I like it though! Just one of the dozens of sites I looked at on the subject: http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-medals/iron_cross.htm

OK Bird...go ahead and tell him to start posting at TNet...we'll be looking for him! :D

That's some really great finds you two!

Nana

Cool site!! I think it may some type of commemorative medal. I have looked through a couple of books and can't find it eather. ???

What does it seem to be made of? It doesn't appear to as well made as most german medals, where the decoration is flaking off. Beneath the flaked off areas it looks like rusting as though it were made of steel, which would be odd for a german cross of any type. Also, it looks like the center was applied to it (from the photo), rather than cast in one piece. Any markings on the back? I'm beginning to think it might have been a civilian patriotic type thing :-\ But still, a nice find.
