This is the 1st identifiable copper I've ever found (1775). I was shocked at the condition when it came out of the plug and was only about 2 inches down. Came from an early 19th century property that has recently been torn down. I'm wondering if the coin had been under the floors and never really had to battle the elements? I just wouldn't think a coin of this age would hold up so well. I washed off some of the dirt, but I'd like to clean it up a little. Should i just put it in olive oil?

Also, can anyone tell me a little more about the coin? I'm assuming it's a King George, but I don't know anything about these coins. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

WHAT A FEELING PULLING A BEAUTIFUL COPPER OUT OF THE GROUND!!!!!!!!

Gee...seems like nobody wants to post any value estimates! ;D

Here. According to this eBay search, it could be worth several hundred dollars.

Thanks for the link. Not sure exactly how much it's worth. No way I would ever sell it though. It was my most exciting find ever. I only wish every time out would produce a coin like this.

Since he asked about putting oil on it... and we know olive oil is most used.. heck.. I have some roman and greek coppers tht have been soaking in it for years!!! What do people think about renaissance wax?? Used by the museums.. seems to do a good job?? Any downside?? I have rubbed it in to a number of relics... including old leather to preserve it after reading up on it.... so far.. so good...

You're talking apples and oranges here. Oil has acid and is a cleaner, wax on the other hand is just for preservation. That coin going in oil would be a huge mistake because the green would probably fade in places leaving big ugly spots. Trust me, I know! (even water can be a vig no no if you want to keep all the color)
