This is the 1st identifiable copper I've ever found (1775). I was shocked at the condition when it came out of the plug and was only about 2 inches down. Came from an early 19th century property that has recently been torn down. I'm wondering if the coin had been under the floors and never really had to battle the elements? I just wouldn't think a coin of this age would hold up so well. I washed off some of the dirt, but I'd like to clean it up a little. Should i just put it in olive oil?

Also, can anyone tell me a little more about the coin? I'm assuming it's a King George, but I don't know anything about these coins. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

WHAT A FEELING PULLING A BEAUTIFUL COPPER OUT OF THE GROUND!!!!!!!!

Very nice Counterfeit, nut am inclined to think M. Mills.

Looks very close to a MACHIN'S MILLS, I'd make sure it's not a variety of the 1775. The obverse looks like a pretty good match.

i think Ironpatch nailed it! great find!!

Listed as very scarce.

PS... I wouldn't do anything other than maybe very carefully scrape a little of the remaining dirt away with a toothpick.

Great find!! Congrats,I agree with Iron Pach,do nothing, just get rid of the dirt! I've lost my fate in olive oil.I soaked Indian heads for months with mixt results. Pannonian

That should clean up beautifully....Best one I've seen in a while.I'm sure there will be an Up-Date.Big Congrat's on a Sweet coin

the head doesn't look right! he was much uglier with more chins :icon_scratch:

Real nice find,

No olive oil. Clean it with soap and water, and a soft tooth brush. You can try a little warm peroxide and tooth pick if you still have a lot of green, but wash good after and rinse in distilled water. Then coat with "Renaissance Wax", available from coin dealers. An alternative to this wax, simply use plain lip balm. I have never have had any luck cleaning further, so I usually just remove dirt and coat with the wax.

After looking at them closely, I think that should be a valuable find! I'm interested in what Don in SJ has to say about this one...

And in terms of cleaning--Don't. The coin already looks great. Don't risk it until positive about the variety...

Congrats on getting a Machins Mill Halfpenny, IP is 100% correct it is a MM for sure. I also agree, just try to pick off the remaining dirt, the coin could easily lose detail if cleaned harshly or even soaked in olive oil. It is not a solid surface judging by the edge peel, so enjoy it as it is. I would do more to it but that is just me. I saw four of them sold in 2006 C4 catalog and 3 in 2007, not a valuable one in corroded condition, but still in demand. But enjoy your first readable KGIII copper! Machins Mills KGIII coppers are not the commonest ones found, I only ever found one and my son none, so congratulations again of a nice find.

Don

Added: after looking at the photos again, I would after dry cleaning the remaining dirt, soak it in distilled water for a day, but resist trying to clean anymore after the soak, just dry under a lamp, if it looks like it will peel more from where it already is at the edges, than perhaps do put a coat of wax on it, otherwise leave alone.

The pupose of the distilled water soak is to hopefully neutralize the corrosive material left on the coin.

Thanks for the quick identification. When you say very scarce, how rare is that?

If I wasn't there myself I wouldn't have believed it came out of the ground! The pictures don't do it justice! The amount of detail is incredible! What an awesome find for your first LC with a date. not sure if it beats the used condom I found there though, kidding. Way to go bud!!!

Thanks for all of the information on the coin. I was waiting to hear from you on this post. What is the value on a coin like this?

I should have mentioned...

I just recently traded my Minelab Sovereign GT for a used Explorer II with an 8" minelab coil, 8" x 11" elliptical platypus coil, and a 5.5" Sunray coil. The Explorer also came with the sunray probe . THIS WAS MY FIRST HUNT WITH THE EXPLORER II. The coin was my second target I've ever dug with my new detector. Have to say, I am thrilled.
