Hello out there Tnetters. Its been a while since I've posted. For that matter, it's been a while since i've been out with my detector. However, I made some time today and met up with my buddy Steve for a hunt. We had minimal success at our first site (a farm that dates back to the 1700's) so we decided to hit a site that we hit last year. It's a house site that dates back to 1790 and is still currently in use. We decided to hunt in the tilled garden area that we had recovered a few coppers from last year.

We had a pretty good day. I found two large coppers, one of which is a King George I (1721) in excellent condition. Not able to ID the second copper. Hopefully after a cleaning i might get something. The buffalo Nickel is a no date and was lying right on the surface in the garden. Here are a few pics of my finds for the day.

Scroll down a few replies for cleaned pics of the King George as well as pictures of my buddy Steve's copper. (1806 draped bust large cent.)

wtg :headbang: nice finds, so how did u clean the lc up so nicely, i found an 1803 and only rinced with water and soap, didnt clean it up to well. any suggestions?

That one might take some work because even though it just looks like dirt on the coin, that brown crud can be fairly hard to get off. I've cleaned similar looking coins and was definitely tougher than the typical green corrosion we usually deal with. The only way to know for sure is to try the peroxide and see what % comes off. It may take several tries.

Rob,

It is about time you got back to the Colonial hunt! That King George has my blood pumping! Did you peroxide it? I liked the look of the copper with the dirt highlighting the features.

It is good to see you back! :headbang:

I think I liked it better before cleaning it too. It didn"t need peroxide. I just soaked it in warm water, brushed the dirt off with a q-tip and Then i coated it in wax (Don in SJ's method) Probably should have skipped the wax step. :-[ Thanks for the reply.

I have used wax for many years and my personal taste is to not wax coins, it's just way to glossy. After the peroxide a quick dip in olive oil, then wiped, I find gives the best result once it dries a little. Once you feel it looks good putting it in a 2x2 probably keeps it close to the same for a very long time.

You can easily boil the wax off, only takes seconds.

Rob,

I just noticed that you dug a couple shoe buckle frames, eh? I would love to see a close-up of them. That site is definitely killer! :headbang:

Here you go Kirk. I'm not sure if the one thing is part of a buckle. Possibly just a decorative piece to something. :dontknow:

Re: Beautiful King George I copper. My oldest coin find.

Rob,

They are both frames to a Colonial shoe buckle. With the coppers you dug and the shoe buckles, that was one awesome hunt. I have two Colonial buckles this year (1 knee, 1 shoe). I must dig more!

Truly outstanding finds. Congrats. Perhaps part of a drawer pull on the object in question?
