Today I was running solo, and I decided to head back into the deep dark woods where I had done very well about twenty years ago. The woods have changed a lot since I was there last time but, that doesn't mean there isn't some interesting discoveries to be made.

I headed for where I had found an 1810 reale all those years ago and came upon a fairly decent signal probably about twenty to thirty feet from the reale find. It ended up being a nice large cent 1828 at about 10 inches, which is pretty deep for me as far as coins go. I worked my way along the stream in the area, since streams have always been lucky for me and found a nice button, unfortunately it wasn't a GW but I guy can dream can't he? As I was wandering along above the stream headphones on, and for some reason I looked up and there... WAS A BEAR! He looked at me, I looked at him, he looked at me some more and I started planning escape routes, or the nearest tree I could scramble up. He then took off like a shot and then stopped not far from where we had the started our staring contest, he then started to run again and disappeared over the ridge.

In all my years in the woods, I have not had a close encounter with a bear so, even if I hadn't found anything today I would still consider it a good day out....

Not the actual bear since this all happened quickly but almost exactly like I saw it..

I took offence to the "moronic" gesture. I hunt, I have killed animals, I have hunted for bears (unsuccessful) If I could I would carry a handgun if I were in a place where there were allot of bears (not New Jersey) If that had been a sow bear with her little ones, we might have read about this in the papers, even if you had a piece on you at the time it might have not helped. Now you know if in that woods you need to be loud and bang on things every now and again. Bears are not like deer, they are very solitary animals, they don't like to be around humans unless they smell food. Lots of noise, and don't hang twinkies around your neck.
I would carry (if it were legal) in some areas I want to metal detect to protect me from humans, they are much more dangerous than an old black bear. So I end up not detecting there.

Almost forgot, I love the detail on your LC and that is a cool button!

Guess I need to clear that one up. My inference was that any hunter who mistook me for a deer (or some other critter) has to be a moron. I wasn't calling all hunters morons. I also promise to keep my opinion to myself the next time guns, hunting or trapping is mentioned in a thread! You all know my stance on those subjects, so that's the end of it. HH.

Don't sweat it Tim. We all have areas in our life we are passionate about. That's why we are here because our common ground is metal detecting and artifact hunting etc...

Do you find buttons of this type in your area? I live in lower Michigan so I rarely get the caliber of finds that you guys [and gals] on the East Coast get.

GKman nice finds. I'm from upstate, and I have been surprised by different types of wildlife on many occasions and I never felt I was in danger. But
on two separated occasions metal detecting I have been approached by two legged animals that had a big advantage, they were armed.
Needless to say but I will I was ******* my pants, but after many questions both times they told me to leave and I was happy to do so.

Time Machine.

Hi Michigan
This one was more intricate than most which are just flat buttons, but we find quite a few with some sort of detail. I do know that there was a GW button found within five miles of where I was...

Yikes, be careful out there time machine.

LC is in awesome shape! Congrats on finds!

The bear was probable trying to figure out what equipment you were using and if you were the guy from the commercial and gonna rip off his gold chain and take his coins so he decided to make a quick get away on the motor cycle he had stashed in the bushes! He must have dish TV in his bear cave!
