Today I was running solo, and I decided to head back into the deep dark woods where I had done very well about twenty years ago. The woods have changed a lot since I was there last time but, that doesn't mean there isn't some interesting discoveries to be made.

I headed for where I had found an 1810 reale all those years ago and came upon a fairly decent signal probably about twenty to thirty feet from the reale find. It ended up being a nice large cent 1828 at about 10 inches, which is pretty deep for me as far as coins go. I worked my way along the stream in the area, since streams have always been lucky for me and found a nice button, unfortunately it wasn't a GW but I guy can dream can't he? As I was wandering along above the stream headphones on, and for some reason I looked up and there... WAS A BEAR! He looked at me, I looked at him, he looked at me some more and I started planning escape routes, or the nearest tree I could scramble up. He then took off like a shot and then stopped not far from where we had the started our staring contest, he then started to run again and disappeared over the ridge.

In all my years in the woods, I have not had a close encounter with a bear so, even if I hadn't found anything today I would still consider it a good day out....

Not the actual bear since this all happened quickly but almost exactly like I saw it..

Nice finds. The bears are getting brave this year. Never really carried before but now I don't leave home without one or both.

Nice finds, by the way don't try to outclimb a bear in a tree, it would be like trying to outswim a croc or gator.

Yeah, I almost didn't put that since I have seen bear documentaries, and the video of them zipping up trees.. But, in the heat of the moment, you are thinking of all possibilities... I had the lesche digger and shovel to combat him if it came to it...

I keep saying I am going to get my carrier permit, I had better do it before we are completely disarmed....I have no excuse since a buddy of mine is a police chief and could zip it right through...

No doubt they will out climb and out run you. Make yourself known and never mess with a sow and her cubs. She will do anything for her cubs. Hope it never comes to it but a firearm could be your only chance in a bad situation. Giving a bear a warning shot will probably solve the problem.

very nice finds. the bears are kind of common round these parts, had them on the porch numerous times, even opened the door once (thought some one was there) and spooked one off the porch.. heck I even shot and killed one with my bow off the porch. with any wild animal it is a matter of respecting their abilities, with bears there is always the possibility of injury or death. The young males are like starving clowns, funny to watch as they hunt for anything to eat. it is the sows and old boars that get my attention. good luck

Never had a close encounter with a bear. Walked up on a bobcat that was hiding in the bushes once but never a bear. From what I've read the best thing you can do is make yourself seem as big as possible... stand tall and don't turn away from the bear. I also heard on a documentary that bears tend to be startled and or scared off by unusual noises (like metal banging on metal). So if the bear begins to walk your way just start clanging your shovel against something else that you have that is metallic. In your case clanging your lesche against your relic shovel would have been the way to go. Be safe out there.... and by the way... nice large cent!

Love the LC. Probably would have required a middle of the woods underwear discard for me. Congrats on find and still being able to tell us about it ha ha.

Unfortunately, those guys can climb too. You should carry out in the woods.

Close call , :o kool finds and I would go back  imo all ya gotta do is

implement a better self protection plan for those risky isolated areas .

dawg

Just what we need, a bunch of metal detectorists armed to the teeth. I'm sure that will do wonders for the reputation of the metal detecting community. Buy some bear spray if you're that afraid of being mauled while detecting.

You should not need a permit to open carry; just make sure your shirt or jacket does not cover your sidearm. My buddy, in Copemish, Michigan always carries when he goes out to his gardens or out back. He had a "pet" bear [His mother died and he raised her but she was still wild basically] Then one day she brought a boyfriend home. My friend said it was the biggest Michigan Black Bear he had ever seen. 600 lbs. plus; and his bear named Ursula was over 400. I said "that's around the State record bear that Ted Nugent shot". Unfortunately you can't hunt bears where he is at.
If it was me I would be carrying the biggest handgun I could afford; like the .500 Smith & Wesson.
That button is very interesting
