Hello everyone,

I’ve had this rock since I can remember, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what it might be made of? Thank you!

Let me be the first to welcome you to Tnet. Lots of great folks here, so I hope you have a grand time.

There are some brilliant folks on here concerning rocks and minerals, so I will defer to them for now. Good luck.

My guess is that it’s a metamorphic rock called gneiss. You can see banding, folding and breakage of some layers particularly in picture 2. Also looks to be brecciated. The formation this hand specimen came from has seen a lot of action. Minerals include quartz and possibly iron minerals.

Thank you! I’ve just had a read up on gneiss, followed by your suggestion; absolutely fascinating, “a history longer than life”- I thought highly of it anyway, but even more so now!
