I was born in Pittsburgh but I didnt catch it. Great work Breezie. Im going to guess its something from a bridge. Some kind of cover plate maybe. I wonder if the letters will identify a certain structure?

That would be crazy if it was from a bridge and ended all the way up in Lake Erie and then washed up on shore. Long interesting journey I bet

Yeppers, it's crazy how items end up where they do. I found a 1950's lipstick tube lying beside a CW 3-ring Minie in the same hole. As far as making a long trip is concerned, I found a 1500s Spectacle buckle in NC, so I your plate could have been a 'traveling man' too. :) Breezie

Any update/emails from the historians? Breezie

A guy from the Heinz History Center is working on it, but he is a volunteer and only works on Thursdays. So it may be slow going.

So this is what I got, another dead end sorta...

Hello Jason,

Thanks for forwarding the additional photos, but even with that extra
information we have not been able to identify your beach find.

Some of us agree with you that the item looks like a log book/journal cover, but
as you mentioned, the printing is on the side where we wouldn't expect it to be.

We checked our Pittsburgh-area business directories from the mid-20th century
for names that started with "C. W. Germ..." and came up with the following in
the 1940 directory (and directories from other years in that era): "Germann,
Clarence W (Vesta H) dispr Duquesne Light Co. h 1334 Rescue." That translates
into Clarence W. -- a dispatcher at Duquesne Light Company -- and Vesta H.
German lived at 1334 Rescue Street, Pittsburgh, PA. That is the only name we
could find that comes close to what is shown on your item. We have attached the
1940 U.S. Federal Census record for Clarence for your information. The census
record identifies his occupation as a "system operator."

It's a long shot, but the only thing we suggest you can do is contact Duquesne
Light Company to see if they can identify this item. The company's contact
information should be on their website at https://www.duquesnelight.com/.

If we find any other information that we think might help you we will forward it
to you, but at this point we don't have any other ideas.

Good luck in your research.

Regards,
Tim Breslin
Researcher

Agreed, hope maybe they'll come across something in the future and he left me with a little lead.

Here's some info. The first recorder was assigned to find a suitable design for the seal. His name was "C"harlie "W"illiams.
Could be a long shot..lol
Maybe a bookcover ?
Section 3. Local college is hosting an event to bring you beach finds in and have them looked at and hopefully identified. Know where I'll be going tomorrow. Hoping for some more leads! Will also show him some of the ideas y'all have had as well after he looks at it.

The name and insignia are in the wrong direction, and it's a bit small, but the hinge side looks a lot like the top to an old mailbox with a lid.

No luck, no new info from the Beach Find expo. Did learn about all the fossil corral I find though.

Will the beach finds event have kind of an exposition, too? Some photos would be nice...

I like your profile pic with the lures and fishing tackle. All found items?

Ya I started out with just looking for fishing lures.

I'll check and see if they added photos, but I haven't seen any yet.

And thanks, I have some better photos of lure finds but they are now on my computer and I usually just use my phone.

Still no luck on identifying the exact origins of this find yet. I did win "Best Historical Beach Find" at the 2013 Great Lakes Beach Glass and Arts Festival. Rather have found out more info about the object though....

I found this thread while searching for a place to post an unidentified beach find that I have. I realize this thread is old, and the OP hasn't been active for some time now. I suspect that this may be a University of Pittsburgh college-related item. It's hard to say if it's a City of Pittsburgh or some other entities branding (the logo is used elsewhere in the region). I agree with the previous poster that it appears to be some type of notebook or similar front/cover. I put the word out to some folks I know in that region. I'll post again with results, if any.
