I think your expert may have missed his mark a little.

It is, I believe, a socket bayonet.

I'm inclined to agree with the expert - not a socket bayonet as it doesn't have a socket, not a plug bayonet as I've never seen one with a spiral plug (wouldn't need a spiral plug for the old smoothbore muskets). I agree that it looks cast and therefore not a bayonet. Looks more like a ground anchor which you would screw an umbrella to.

Sound about right to me!!!Even has a foot push.

Well Tony those do seem like some interesting and time consuming things i could be doing. Some would get me locked up on the 6th floor of Womack Army Medical Center ,others would scare any potential friends or co-workers away (at least for an hour or so), and still others Im trying as we speak. As for the robot thing my room mate already does that and I refuse to join him. I truly do appreciate the help and your research on my problem of boredom. If I were home I would be detecting the property and yard of a two and a half story hand hewn log home (circa 1845) that my father recently purchased and plans to restore. However Im 8 hours away so i will day dream of that for the time being. The half an hour i got to spend detecting there over my 12 days of leave in June I found a 1906 indian head, some clad, brass shotgun shells, a horse shoe, and the ever so abundant pull tabs. Thanks again -JD in WV

Hi JD, Kia ora from Mike in NZ.
Interesting find
and awesome post from Tony - the voice of experience? ;)
I'm familiar with the 'screwing the eyes' to pass the time - but I'm going to have to test the wet hand/sneeze trick, as soon as I can. Sounds like fun. I hope my wife thinks it is too ;D

My suggestions for overcoming boredom would be No. 1 - read interesting books
No. 2 I was going to suggest - play Backgammon, especially the Acey Deucy version.

So I googled some info to link for you and the first hit described the game as being very popular with the US Armed Forces. So , to use an old expression (just NZ??), I feel like I'm teaching my Grandma to suck eggs!

Just in case - here's the link
http://www.mastersgames.com/rules/backgammon-rules.htm

Be cool JD
and, Kia Kaha - Stay Strong
Cheers, Mike
