Posting for a friend, hopefully someone can help us out with this one. This item was found in a field outside of Clovis, New Mexico. It seems to have an attachment for a rifle barrel making it resemble a bayonet, but the size seems to be more indicative of a rapier or something similar. The sheath is rusted onto the blade, hopefully that’s visible in the photos. Any help you can provide would be very welcome. Happy hunting!

PS: All apologies if the photos are too large.

The Arisaka does seem to be the key here, and I did find one further bit of information. The handle of the bayonet does have a series of numbers on it, 5036172. Does this mean anything to anyone, or is the pertinent information going to be on the blade itself?

All the stamps will be on the blade itself, these will tell us the armory made at, county, etc. The numbers you list are the serial numbers of the bayonet. Originally the numbers would be the same as the rifle so they would have been mated at the beginning, but rarely did they stay that way.

Added: Looking at the pics again, are the washers on the handle oval in shape (see pic below)? On the blow up of the pictures they do look like they are, if so this would make it a Hoten Arisaka bayonet. Plus the serial number tells us it's from the 50th series hence the 50 at the beginning of the serial number.

True I should have left that one word out, was typing too dang quick for my brain to keep up! Deleted the word to prevent confusion, and now I am going to bed before I can make any more blunders tonight! :BangHead:

There are washers in the handle. Is Hoten another type of bayonet, or the plant of manufacture? You guys are just brilliant, it would have taken me weeks to figure this out, and I still would have been wrong!

Next step, carefully remove the sheath. I'll let you know.

Hoten is one of the armories where the rifles and bayonets were made. Just ignore the Hoten reference for now.

Okay, finally got the sheath free. The blade was in suprisingly good shape, some rust, but more discoloration than anything else. And the blade was still plenty sharp, too. It came from an armory in Manchuria, between 1930 and 1934, from what I was able to find. Thanks for your help everyone!
