I don't generally go lookin for coins but they do show up now and again.but when I saw an empty lot that had recently been scraped for a new build, I could not resist. There was an old school house there between the 1880s and 1910 but it had been pounded on by others and had been a trashy lot. Being scraped of its topsoil left a little promise as I had not found anything on a different site.Anyways, sorry for the long story about a little barber......

I love finding scraped ground, and will take one Barber dime, any day. Very nice!

I new to this hobby so tell me more about scraped ground. I was thinking wrong, that as it is scraped so are all the finds also gone. I think I will have hone my eyes to search differently.

opportunity abounds for the alert....

often times when some new building is to be built or an old one torn down, a contractor will use heavy equipment like a tractor, grader or what is called a bobcat to level out the ground. When they do this, it does sometimes take away soil that contains artifacts or coins. But it also removes trashy topsoil, leaving behind the deeper targets that are no longer masked by the trash that was above them. On a street or sidewalk tearouts it is similar, only what is removed is/was a permanent barrier to old coins.....So keep your eyes out for those construction sites as well.

Nice Barber Dime find - Congratulations!

Nice Barber...I want one so bad but haven't gotten one yet!

That is SWEET!:hello2:

Congrats on the Baber dime. I see it's a 1901, does it by chance have an S mint mark?

That was one of those wish moments as I see the obverse first....then the moment of truth as I turn it over to see the infamous Philadelphia (no) mark.....waaawaaaawa
