Bags of coins ??

At the Credit Union I work at Cents=$50, Nickels=$200, Dimes=$500, Quarters=$500, Halves=$1,000. Some banks bag halves at $500 rather than $1,000.

One person also said their banks halves machine bags at $100.

Bags come from coin cointing machines, and it is up to the bank to decide if they will sell them or not. It is a very touch and go type of deal. Some banks refuse to sell, some you need to talk to a manager about it, and some will gladly sell them... this is of course assuming the bank has any at all.

Good luck in your searching!

There are different coin machines which can be set to fill at different levels.

The only ones I have seen are

Cents - $25 or $50
Nickels - $100 or $200
Dimes - $500 or $1000
Quarters - $500 or $1000
Halves - $500 or $1000
Dollars - unknown...never been brave enough to buy small dollars..too much junk for the cost.

As a random tidbit Gman, I believe dollars are $1k as well. At least that is the amount that the bank I use holds in their coin machine. I always watch the touchscreen as they change out bags and such and noticed that amount for the dollar coins.

one of the banks i dump at will sell me bags of halves (i don't buy 'em because the majority, if not all, are my junkiron), quarters or dimes but won't guarantee the accuracy of the count. seems to me that after they fill the bag they could run the coin again just to be sure of the amount in the sack but....alas, no. they just ship it off to the fed and the fed sends back the total after they run it.

also, one of the machines i dump into can be set to "fill" at different levels. the half dollars used to be set at $800.00 until i showed up and started filling it. they quickly reset it to "fill" at $400.00 because of the weights involved.

so buying sacks of coin may produce some silver or other keepers but you stand the chance of losing some cash due to the inaccuracy of the machines. just a thought.

Yes, you typically do lose a little buying the bags instead of boxes. However, when I consider the extra time needed to open rolls and garbage generated as well as potentially extra gas used to drive to more banks to get boxes... the few pennies, nickels, or dimes I am usually short are essentially nothing. Besides, bags provide much more exotic finds than rolls will as bags are much more likely to have foreign coins.

Sometimes you also get more than you paid for, but not as often.

It's a game, and a hobby. If the bags were off that much, I would go back to boxes. But for the few pennies I am losing...I prefer the variety. :)

Thanks everyone. One more quick question. How about sealed Fed bags, the ones the feds send to the banks. Are they available for purchase?

Thanks,
D.S.
