I found what looks like some kind of badge. No clue on what it is.. all i can make out on it is "Du Jour BCSSDCCR DuJour 1886" and some kind of design in the middle of it. Thanks for looking Tex.. Think i got an anwser below.

Cool find, looks like it has an Egyptian motif, a pharoh or sphinx head. 1886 Question of the Day: "How did business respond when the 1886 strike for the eight hour day took place?" That or something pertaining to that subject is one possibility, I didn't post the link because it might have ads. It may be a great piece of history that you found.

"On May Day 1886, the workers at the Harvesting Machine Co. in Chicago began a strike in the hope of gaining a shorter work day. On May 3, police were used to protect strikebreakers and a scuffle broke out, one person was killed and 50 injured. It was a horrible day May 4, 1886 when anarchists murdered eight Chicago police officers. The offenders shot at the officers and threw a bomb during a labor riot. Blood ran in the streets and before it was over 70 people were killed or wounded. The suspects were rounded up, tried and were sentenced to be hanged. One suspect blew himself up cheating the hangman but the others danced at the bottom of the gallows located at Hubbard and Dearborn Streets."

badgewithnickel.jpgSorry for taking so long to answer some of the questions.. It seems to be one piece cast pewter. It was found in Schuylkill county Pa. The front and the back are the same this is the better of the two sides. 1886 is stamped on it four times no other dates.
backside.jpgBack side of the badge.. it seems to me to be pewter or lead. it was found in Orwigsburg Pa.
letters.jpg croped the pic so you can see the letters on the bottom..

I see the new pics in the original post. The image on the back is different than the front but I can't yet make it out. I also do NOT think the front image is the Sphinx. The head dress is wrong.

I'm thinking Egyptian revival society item or a charm from a museum like the Met or Louvre.

Anyone care to venture a new guess on the letters at the bottom? To me it looks like B I S S D C C R. But there is no match for that on the internet that I can find.

Of course there is still the possibility that the letters represent French words - which leaves me at a loss. My French isn't even good enough to get my face slapped.

I also think the shape is a clue but I don't know what.

Welcome back Matt. I can see a Zoltar type image very clearly. Do you remember these old fortune telling machines?

This item has something to do with a carnival, arcade or magic show I believe. Its some kind of souvenir prize or charm I think.

Now do you see how important it is to post the backside, Jim? I was about to give up all together. In the future I hope others will not fight or resist requests for additional pics or a picture of the backside. It can be very frustrating. This is an interesting item and I think its solvable if everybody else hasnt given up.

I guess I can see a guy in a turban. Or maybe it is only "power of sugggestion". I still can't put it all together.

Any new thoughts on the letters?

So we have Question Du Jour, 1886, eight letters, and two mysterious images.

Does the little "extra bit" at the top represent a keyhole?

Do you think cleaning would help?

Yes it is a keyhole shape. Very unusual. Whats the purpose of the teardrop shaped holes? If its not brass, it must be cast all in one piece with a brass ring. It was also colored.

There may only be 6 letters. The first 2 may be something else.

Im thinking "fortune of the day" or horoscope or "question of the day" along those lines.

OK dont damage it. Im hoping others will try to help. I think its an interesting item. If we had the bottom letters, we could google it but its hard to see. Its got to show up somewhere. Ill try searching later the magic token sites and I know of an Egyptian Revival collector that may be of some help.

Thanks Jim. :icon_thumright:

Can you think of any reason why there would be a French connection?

lots of German and Irish in this area. i am not originally from this area so my knowledge is lacking for the diff kinds of ethnics. Jeff of Pa. would know more about that then myself. I'll look at my pics and see if i can zoom in better on the letters.
