I found what looks like some kind of badge. No clue on what it is.. all i can make out on it is "Du Jour BCSSDCCR DuJour 1886" and some kind of design in the middle of it. Thanks for looking Tex.. Think i got an anwser below.

Cool find, looks like it has an Egyptian motif, a pharoh or sphinx head. 1886 Question of the Day: "How did business respond when the 1886 strike for the eight hour day took place?" That or something pertaining to that subject is one possibility, I didn't post the link because it might have ads. It may be a great piece of history that you found.

"On May Day 1886, the workers at the Harvesting Machine Co. in Chicago began a strike in the hope of gaining a shorter work day. On May 3, police were used to protect strikebreakers and a scuffle broke out, one person was killed and 50 injured. It was a horrible day May 4, 1886 when anarchists murdered eight Chicago police officers. The offenders shot at the officers and threw a bomb during a labor riot. Blood ran in the streets and before it was over 70 people were killed or wounded. The suspects were rounded up, tried and were sentenced to be hanged. One suspect blew himself up cheating the hangman but the others danced at the bottom of the gallows located at Hubbard and Dearborn Streets."

badgewithnickel.jpgSorry for taking so long to answer some of the questions.. It seems to be one piece cast pewter. It was found in Schuylkill county Pa. The front and the back are the same this is the better of the two sides. 1886 is stamped on it four times no other dates.
backside.jpgBack side of the badge.. it seems to me to be pewter or lead. it was found in Orwigsburg Pa.
letters.jpg croped the pic so you can see the letters on the bottom..

My guess is that it's part of a Egyptian Revival era watch/key fob. Egyptian Revival jewelry ran rampant after the discovery of King Tut's tomb.

I tend to agree.
since du jour means Day & the other word is Question & there is a Pic that definitely looks Egyptian,
I'd guess in 1886 something happened in Egypt, that this represents.

could BCSSDCCR be an anagram of the answer & some of those c's be o's ?

Could this item be Scout related ? or even Masonic ?

Or could it be a very poor representation of the statue of liberty ?
The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States, rose above New York harbor in 1886

I think you guys are right on with your analysis. I'd like to see this item cleaned up a little more. I think we'll find that the letters at the bottom are another French word. I also think we'll see that the other date is not 1886.

There were excavations of the Sphinx in 1886 and 1926. Another observation - the ring is not through the top hole and the holes in this item are asymmetrical. Not sure if that is a clue...

Cool item. Still researching...

Yes Matt, I was thinking 1936 as the second Date
But was unaware of a 1926 Connection.

Worlds fair also comes to mind.
and the Tab keeps telling me it's either not complete, or this item has a Use
other then just decorative, otherwise it would be a loop, or have a fob shaped connector.

I Also think the ring originally may have gone through 2 of the holes

I monkeyed with the image in Paint Shop. I'm not convinced it is the Sphinx. The head dress is too long. I'm thinking it is the face/head of a sarcophagus. The word at the bottom could be a Pharoh's name.

I couldn't find any connection with a World's Fair but The Met in NY made acquisitions of Egyptian mummies in the late 19th C and everybody was crazy for them. I'm sure other US museums did the same. Maybe a souvenir from an exhibit?

I know in 1886 the curator of the Cairo Museum was a French guy (Maspero) and some significant mummy work was done by him during that year.

Tough one. I think its a childrens prize from cereal perhaps and it asks the question of the day. I also believe its 2 different dates.

Thinking outside the box, Im going with a French Colonial African Colony from from ? to 1886 or 1886 to ?

And the depiction may be an Arab. arab.jpg

Its hard to tell. Looking at the split ring would appear 2 pics of the same side.

Even if they are the same, one side may be easier to read than the other.

Oh yea. Very unusual. I would like to see the other side.

It may even be something like SULTAN INS. CO.
Im seeing dots on the bottom so it may be initials for something BCS.S.DC.CR

.
