After I took off for work yesterday, my Father-in-law decided to try out the wife's new MD out in the front yard. I am fairly certain this is a button but can't seem to place an age on it. It was my understanding most buttons pre to early 1800 were flat but the size seems to be right for that era. It is bent back (towards shank side) a little and doesn't stand out as far as the images appear. It is my understanding though that flatter buttons with no stamping on backs are usually colonial/1700s period. Any help in putting a finger on the date range or even point me in the right direction if I am entirely wrong would be greatly appreciated.

I also have this in "what is it". Since posting there, I have it soaking in a peroxide bath. It is undoubtedly brass. As soon as it gets clean, I will post new images. Until then help in dating it would be greatly appreciated. My feeling is it is pre-1820.

Yes, it looks like a "dandy button"--they are usually flat and quite large (typically ca 1700s). Congrats on a nice find in your yard!

Its the size of a Dandy but it not like any Dandy button I have seen, its is a little puzzelling.

Looks like a 2 piece late 1800's button...I could be wrong though...

I was going to guess mid-19th C but I have no other examples to base it on, but it very unlikely to be 18th C (& therefore Colonial).

UPDATE:
Gave it a peroxide bath for a little while and got it about as clean as it looked like it was going to get. Then read to try olive oil. So I tried olive oil for a two hour dip...and it looks exactly like it did when I put it in...except now it is shinny. So my question is, do I wash off the oil? I have also read that some people use WD40...it is a brass button by the way. Any other ideas on how to clean it up?

Been getting mixed reviews on the age as well. Was hoping now that it is a little cleaned up we could re-evaluate its age, etc. I still feel pre-1820s but am open to being wrong if someone has evidence of such. To me, it looks to be stamped brass with no back markings. It is one solid button (not two piece).

Thanks for looking!
