went out both yesterday and this morning to the place where i found the SLQ, the 1916 MERC, and those two large cents last time. yesterday morning i got skunked pretty much. only came away with some clad. this morning however, i got this 1914D BARBER QUARTER and a LARGE CENT that i cant get a date off of. the large cent is in the typical crappy condition that old copper usually comes out of the ground like around here. :'( oh well..I'm still happy to find it. this place is a weird place to hunt. all of the old finds have been within a 100 foot area. i would love to know what drew people to only such a small spot on what is otherwise a huge piece of property. there are some overhead power lines that really make detecting tough. i used the GTI 2500 today and it seemed to fare a little better than the SE did yesterday morning. it still was chattering like crazy though. i can only guess what might be buried directly under those lines but it is just about impossible to detect under them. i tried the sniper coil for the Garrett and it helped, but right under those lines is terrible no matter what coil, machine or sensitivity setting i use. i guess i will have to settle for what i can find away from the lines a bit. there are still a ton of low tones to dig up there because i have only been cherry picking the high tones so far. i would imagine there must be a nickle or two out there somewhere.anyway, I'm pretty happy with this mornings results! ;D a barber quarter was on my list of things to find! thanks for looking.

HP,
Awesome coins. Congrats.

Way to go, nice finds!

Those power lines are tough, do you suspect that the small spot where who have been finding the older coins extends into the area under the power lines, or is it that you just really wanted to try your luck it that area?

I would think that, short of an extended black out, it's probably not going to happen, you're better off telling yourself theres nothing under those lines.

It would be interesting, as you mentioned, to find out what was on that property years ago, and in particular, what was located in the small area where you are finding the old coins.
Perhaps it could lead you to other areas with similar arrangements.

Have you tried looking through some of the old Sanborn maps for that area, or perhaps Beers County Atlas's if there are any for that area?

Happy Hunting,

thanks guys! johnny, i have a sneaky suspicion that this was a local picnic grove. one of the whatzits i dug this morning looks like the brass lid to a portable salt and pepper shaker now that i have cleaned it a little. as for those damn power lines! ;) they run smack dab through the area that i have been finding the good stuff! there is a creek nearby and the lines run next to the creek. i am willing to bet that folks used to swim in that creek and it was probably a big part of why people would want to spend time there. what i don't get is that this "grove" area extends 200 more yards along the bank of the creek, but only THIS area has produced coins. the other areas have old trash in them and judging by some of the junk, it looks to be turn of the century trash, mixed in with modern crap. there really should be coins in those areas too ??? that's a good idea about the beers and sanborn maps. so far i haven't found one with the exact area i am hunting. perhaps a trip to the local universities map room is in order. ;)

Is it possible the area you are hunting has fill dirt in it? The coins may have come from somewhere else when they brought dirt in and spread it out.

If so, find out where that dirt came from!

WTG Kieth....They are both on my list that seem's to be never "scratched off".Although the wife did win one (1914d) from mountainman2 we just got in the mail but it's not the same as finding one.Congrat's and best of luck in the future!!!

Beautiful finds, I look forward to more of your posts in the future. My GTI 2500 has been great around areas that have caused other detectors to chatter to the point of being unhuntable. As an owner of a GTI 2500 and the Minelab SE, how do you personally think they compare? I have been thinking of getting an SE also, but I would probably have to sell my 2500 to get one. I know my 2500 is deadly on pinpointing, and I can always narrow a target down to a few square inches, and I have heard the SE is harder to pinpoint with. I look forward to your opinion, thanks in advance...Ryan

i dont think so Joe, since the roots of all of the trees are exposed due to erosion. that was one of the things that caught my interest about this spot in the first place. the ground looked undisturbed. at least the ground before the power lines that is. it looks like they built an access road next to the lines in case they ever had to work on them. maybe they carted off the first foot of soil when they made that little road! i`ll keep telling myself that! ::)

thanks man! i have been lucky with this one! i just stumbled onto this spot by chance really. i have been able to check a few of those coins off of my wish list as a result! one thing is for certain. I'm gonna hunt the snot out of that little 100 foot by 100 foot area! ;D

hi Ryan! i really think that the SE is a deeper machine. it has consistently pulled coins from much deeper depths than my GTI 2500. The DD coil seems to get better coverage as well but there is a trade off. it IS a little harder to pinpoint with. it takes getting used to. the SE also sounds SO different than the Garrett that it takes a while to get used to that as well. it is a lot different than any other machine i have used. The 2500 is a nice machine though, and although it doesn't get the sheer depth of the SE, the size feature is nice to have, and the depth of the 2500 IS respectable. if you hunt saltwater beaches, the SE wins hands down. it is super stable in the wet salt sand. one other thing i should mention is sweep speed. the Garrett is a relatively fast swing machine, where as the SE is a much slower swing machine. with the SE you have to slow down to let the machine evaluate all of those frequencies it is receiving. that took some getting used to for me but you know what.......its a good habit to get into slowing down and really taking your time. if you are really interested in depth and don't mind a complex machine, i would go for the SE. if you want a machine that's easy to use and has decent depth stay with the Garrett. ;)

Did I miss your post on the 'Sneaky Spot' or is my memory failing once again? ??? :D

I am soooo happy for you to have found such a GREAT site to hunt, Red!!! :o

Fantastic Barber!!! Congrats!!!! Nana ;)

Still looking for my Barber.

Thanks for the opinion, that is what I thought you might say. I do have the 12 inch coil for the 2500 I haven't tried yet, so I will have to do that before I make a decision. If I get the extra depth and can still pinpoint accurately that might be the best option for me. I go relatively slow with the 2500 and have gotten good at figuring out trash signals next to coins so that is a bonus. No beach hunting here, so the salt is not a problem. Thanks again and HH...Ryan
