I got back to the beach today looking for more of my mortar project. No iron but I did find another handful of lead! I also found this old pewter button which may be military...anyone see anything on this? Salt water keeps pewter from breaking down but it also bubbles it. I think I see something but would be interested in other thoughts.

The Geo.II came from the field just above the beach...

That's what I see too...at least the "7" part...

I do see something, but our minds are built to recognise things we already know like numbers, faces etc. But in your area, military makes sense! :icon_thumright:

Just a matter of a little research of the regiments of the era...and area.

Rick...I think that's actually the base of the "7"

Re: Back to the Beach...Another Old Military Button?

I think I can probably see the 67 as well - maybe closer pics or a different angle?
I know, personally its always a lot easier if your holding it. So you're probably right

Re: Back to the Beach...Another Old Military Button?

Very good chance it's military and can be narrowed down a bit because not all had a rim like that. I'd say it's your 2nd Rev War button in a very short time. British this time though. It usually doesn't take much to ID it once you match against the correct one.

If the line that's being called a 7 is clearly some detail, it could also be an X for 20th Regiment. XX.

Notice the foot on the "7". This actual button was found very close to where I found this mine...

Good possibility. Pie crust border, large number, and same location.

The 57th were in this area just after the American Revolution for close to 10 years...I think I'm calling this my second Rev. War button...actually third (RP).

Re: Back to the Beach...Another Old Military Button?

Funny now that I see the different shaped 5. I can make out the outline of it by sitting back from the computer, and actually stands out more than before.. maybe just my poor eyesight ::)

That's the problem with a poor condition button, you can start to things that aren't there, and it's very possible to dig one that's a little different so it's impossible to match. It's much different than coins where even most of the early stuff is well documented.

Several years back Andy dug a different style Rev War 84th officer button from somewhere around there I would guess.

Re: Back to the Beach...Another Old Military Button?

In the first photo, the button appears to have the faint details of both the 5 and 7 as seen in the complete button example posted later. Granted the blown up photo posted second is the from the same photo posted first, however for some reason the 5 is not as readily evident (possibly details were lost in the photo enlargement, or it is just a trick on the eyes?) ;D

Then again, if the button is rotated 180 degrees, that 7 becomes an L, and this could possibly be the extremely rare button of the Loyalist Ontario Legion....................LOL. :laughing7:

In the hand it is definitely a 57. I at first thought it was a 67 but that was due to the stylized "5" on this particular button which looks like a "6".

I could see something there and then when you pointed it out it was very clear and with the same border, nice find! :occasion14:
