Hi everyone! It looks like the last time I posted a thread was Oct. 2023. That makes sense, because I haven't been out detecting since then. (I injured my shoulder and arm in late 2023; finally feeling good enough to swing a detector).
Well, I'm glad to be back - this hobby really is fun. Today I got the chance to explore a new field owned by someone who had given me permission for a different field in 2023. Today's field had a house on it that is shown on the 1918 topographic map (via Historic Aerials) but not on the 1860s map of the area, so I expected to find wheat pennies and hoped for something silver or an Indian Head Cent - and I was lucky and found all of those things, plus a thimble and some other stuff you'd expect to find at a 100-year old home (the red circle area in the first picture). First IHC was an 1894, and the Mercury dime is 1925.
With about one hour left in my available time I decided to cut diagonally across the field, just to see if anything else turned up. Well - I'm glad I did. In the area of the yellow circle the first thing I found of interest was a broken piece of an ornate shoebuckle; I outlined it in yellow on the 4th picture. From that spot I spiraled outward for the next 45 minutes. I was excited to find an 1859 Indian Head Cent (I haven't found too many "fattys") and some great buttons that I believe go back to the Colonial era. The one on the right of picture 4 seems to have a drilled shank, and the one on the left has an amazing bird image - do you think it was hand-etched?
I'm hopeful I've found an undiscovered Colonial-era homesite, but I'll need to get back out there and check it out. More to come!
