It is March 10th and I have not been at my desk at work once. I have had two weeks of business trips with a small stop back home in between. That combined with rainy weekends meant that I have not gotten out much in the last couple of weeks and man it was killing me.

Yesterday Bill and I got together and though the day started out with a huge unforeseen circumstance, it meant that we had to scramble to save the day and find a new site. I was lucky as finally a landowner I have been after for some time was home and permission was granted!

Spent the majority of our time wandering around looking for a couple of spots we had researched, finally during the second half of our day it paid off. At first it was slow, but it became steady and productive.

My take for the day was 23 buttons, two coins, colonial buckles, and plenty of trips to look forward to.

Bill had a heck of a day and I could only do all I could to keep up with his silver...though I did not bag any silver coins, I did get a nice VA Half Penny, 1810 Large Cent, and a complete shoe buckle and 80% of another. I stayed in one small spot for about 70% of my time and located a large pit that has the best potential yet this season. Early pottery, glass and the shoe buckle and pewter spoon all came from it. The Large Cent came right at the edge of it along with several buttons.

I like the small brass lock and the large cast iron one that I dug. I also picked up a nice broken point - this place just has it all. I will let Bill post his, but lets just say not only did his streak continue, but it left me in the dust. I can't wait to get back to this spot as I suspect it has plenty of more goodies to find.

Fantastic day Dan! That is a beautiful VA Halfpenny. Love the shoe buckle and the little brass lock. Looking forward to seeing the results of your next visit there.

Congrats, great hunt!

Excellent finds great site .Beautiful buckle . Jim :icon_thumright:

Great finds! A VA has been on my list for years. I like the Classic Head LC. Don't see too many of those being dug. Strangely enough, I see more Draped posted than Classic Heads. In 20+ years I only have one Classic Head to my name, a sweet 1810 I dug at an early resort years ago.

At any rate, the "mickey mouse" style lock (brass) is a great find. Those are early locks, 1700s for sure.

Cheers,

Buck

30k.gif NICE HAUL - NICE FINDS

thats awesome Dan!!! how is Beau doing? i saw him on the back of american digger magazine. i also saw a few videos of you and him killing it in the creek!!!

Really nice coppers Dan. Soil looks a bit more sandy. The potential for more killer finds is clearly evident. Can't wait to see what else turns up.

I wouldnt be able to sleep at night knowing that other knole hasnt been hit yet. Cant wait for more of your finds. That site has much more in store. Sorta reminds me of our site up here but your soil is much more friendly.

Thanks man! I actualy have only dug a few of those as well. I have dug many more pre and post era large cents. The VA Half is beginning to look more common, like you, I had never dug one until I moved to VA, this is now #4 in such a short time.

Thanks for everyone else, Jim, I have been falling asleep at night thinking about what is on the next hill, with my luck it will be nothing ha ha.

Dan and I have recovered 3 of these early locks plus a barrel padlock that may have been used as a shackle. These probably date to the 1750-1800 time frame based on our reference books as well as other artifacts recovered from this trash pit. Nice find!

Bill,

this one actually came from surfacing hunting. The best date I could find wa 1760's and called a mouse lock. Man that was a fun day!

Sorry 'bout that. I couldn't pull up his pic on my phone and assumed he was talking about one of those large padlocks.
