I found this little guy this afternoon. It is a tiny tongue portion of a little tongue and wreath buckle. Maybe for a hat band or vest? Let me know what you think. The area has given up several Chinese cache coins, locks 1850's stuff.

Nice find KG6YLL! I have a few questions?
Is it stamped brass or solid cast?
Is the center disc domed or slightly raised?

I have never seen a tongue that is flat?

The picture might be deceiving but is the loop slightly arched? I have yet to see a tongue that is arched, all the ones I have dug or seen are straight.

I attached a few pics. of the baby buckles I have dug lately and most of them this last year. They are all 1870's except the one to the right of the penny which was dug out of an 1850's gold rush camp. I believe it to be from a neckerchief or pre tied neck cravat as Kuger mentioned. The rest I don't have a clue unless for dolls as mentioned before.

The buckle above the penny has a patent date of Feb. 20, 1872 and still has some cloth under one side that is folded over. The last picture, I included a full size mans stamped brass T&W buckle for scale.

Hope this helps!

Ironman,

Thank you for your pictures! This proves without a doubt that it is half of a two piece tongue and wreath. To answer your questions.

1. It is stamped brass.
2. The center disc is slightly raised or "domed".
3. There is a slight arch to it which leads me to believe the wreath is round.

Again your buckles are great examples! Thank You again.

It seems like these finds are from a very narrow time frame (20 years or so) and usually found in gold rush areas for some reason. I had not seen ones this small posted before I read this post.

Definitely a baby tongue! Thanks for answering the questions? The wreath, which I really hope you find, will be round.

This is just another great example of the wide variety of clothing attachments that were brought into the goldfields in the early 1850's!

Nice find and glad to see a different style!

You're very welcome Buckles!

Tinpan, I hope you find the tongue to complete your buckle!

Again, WTG on a great piece of Gold Rush history KG6YLL!

Ironman!
