I found this little guy this afternoon. It is a tiny tongue portion of a little tongue and wreath buckle. Maybe for a hat band or vest? Let me know what you think. The area has given up several Chinese cache coins, locks 1850's stuff.

isnt that a suspender clip or a back pack clip?

I thought that at first too. But its so small. It is for sure a buckle tongue, but for a doll? I'm not sure?

The design is Dead-On for a tongue and wreath buckle. And the age of the site is right, too. That is a Very cool find

I'd bet that Tnet member "kuger" would like to see that beauty. He is quite knowledgeable about those style of buckles. Perhaps he has seen one that small before.

Cheers,

Buckles

Great find I have to agree it looks to be a tongue maybe u can find the other half :icon_thumleft:

Cool I don't think I've ver seen one that small. Like Buckleboy said Kuger might know.

Crusader its waaaayyy toooo small for that.

Here is a quote from a member from another forum who is very knowledgeable on this era of relics. "Whereas the larger tongue & wreath buckles were used on elastic cloth and thin leather belts, these tiny buckles like this were in fact used as various clothing fasteners. A close friend and extremely knowledgeable fellow in Gold Rush period clothing, related to me that he had found reference to a similar small tongue & wreath buckle that was used a a fastener on a patented pre-tied neck cravat (19th century equivalent of a clip on neck tie"

OK. Looking at it again I see what you mean. Problem is the US coin means nothing to me in terms of scale :dontknow:
I still don't believe it had a traditional 'wreath' piece which it locked onto, more likely a basic loop attachment.

Thanks Buckles and Vayank,I seen that last night, and gave it a stab(on another forum)I also know a general area and what type of site it came out of and guarantee it is 1850,and a Tongue and Wreath buckle. My assumption was that it was a childs,or a doll as I have a wreath that I want to get together with KG6lly,and see how close it is...I think its real close.
The quote that Kg,added above is from a very good friend of mine, and I spoke to the "expert",he was reffering to(he is an expert)as well, its kind of up in the air as a difinate use for these little guys.I can say its way cool!!!!

Can you post the dimensions? I have dug 2 really small wreaths over the years.. always figuring I'd find the other half.. but never did... I'm just wondering it they might match. I'll have to dig mine out...

Ironman!I feal really foolish for not remembering you have probably dug more miniature T&W's than anybody!I should have asked your opinion a long time ago.....sorry about that. That is really impressive(nice RARE rounded belt loop Eagle too!) seeing them all together like that,as well.

I just found my tiny wreath and really think it is mighty close to KG6ll's tongue(mine is missing the belt loops though)I should be seeing your cousin Monday so maybe we can see!

Nice find KG6YLL! I have a few questions?
Is it stamped brass or solid cast?
Is the center disc domed or slightly raised?

I have never seen a tongue that is flat?

The picture might be deceiving but is the loop slightly arched? I have yet to see a tongue that is arched, all the ones I have dug or seen are straight.

I attached a few pics. of the baby buckles I have dug lately and most of them this last year. They are all 1870's except the one to the right of the penny which was dug out of an 1850's gold rush camp. I believe it to be from a neckerchief or pre tied neck cravat as Kuger mentioned. The rest I don't have a clue unless for dolls as mentioned before.

The buckle above the penny has a patent date of Feb. 20, 1872 and still has some cloth under one side that is folded over. The last picture I included a full size mans T&W buckle for scale.

Hope this helps!
Ironman!
