Awsome digging tool... Last one you'll every buy...

Hello All,

Several have posted comments about their diggers... Some good, but mostly bad advising how they have broken in one way or another... The detector club here in Tulsa Ok., has an awesome digging tool... Kinda pricy, but well worth it... I have been using one for 15+ years now and the thing is still going strong... I’ve been able to cut the neatest plug in yards, cut through roots, and gets through gravel fairly well… The only maintenance is to hit it with a metal file occasionally (don’t use any grinder or the tool will loose it’s tempering)…

Price is $29.00… Terry advised he only has about 30 left…
There are three different models...
I've attached a photo of the one I use, and a cheesy drawing of the others...
You’ll need to call and ask about the shipping if you are interested in one…

If you happen to have access to a milling machine, or a buddy that works in a machine shop, you could use the "cheesy" drawings to make your own...

Re: Awsome digging tool... Last one you'll every buy...

Just remember guys. Just like the first one in the post, it WILL be the last digger you buy. Your wife will use it to dig you a hole. About 6 feet deep I would guess.

Thanks Bertman, I just called Terry and ordered one. I have tried all sorts of digging tools and this one looks good. Thanks Mike.

Daryl,

Since there is no "wife" in my life, do you have a link where I can get one of those diggers? While I'm there I may even look at the shovels!

Re: Awsome digging tool... Last one you'll every buy...

Plenty of places to rent them. Don't know of any for sale though.

FYI, I believe you can cold-grind tempered steel without having it lose it's temper. The key is to make sure it doesn't overheat and change color.

Re: Awsome digging tool... Last one you'll every buy...

Bertman,

Are these diggers the same as what "Speedy" use to sell at the Treasure Expo in Fremont NE.?

I have two that I bought from him about 15 years ago, and they are the greatest!

Both of mine are 2 3/8" wide. One is 7" long, the other 7 1/2".

here is what mine look like:

Re: Awsome digging tool... Last one you'll every buy...

The ground is so dry and hard out here-I broke my 2nd Fiskars digging trowel last night, got fed up and just ordered your suggested tool from Terry-he's out of the pointed ones, so I just got the flat one. I'll give it the Samsonite test and let you know ;D Send Rain!

The ones you have were made by "Flash"... He has passed on and the ones Terry is selling now are made in Texas using the design "Flash" came up with... What a coincidence, your diggers and mine were made by the same guy... Have you ever used a better digger? I know I sure haven't... Take care Timberwolf...

You'll love this digger artemis... Don't know of anyone that has broken one... My wife also uses it in the flower beds as her digging trowel... Sure wish I could send some rain your way as it is hindering my hunting time...

Thanks for the information Lasivian... That will save my thumbs from getting more sore than they already are...

Bertman,

My bad...His name was "Flash", not "Speedy". I will blame my mistake on old age ;) I am sorry to hear that Flash has passed on. Do you know where he was from or anything? He was a nice fellow. No...I have never had a better digger. They even work great for removing the grass buildup under your lawn mower too.

In memory of Flash...here he is at the Expo, May 1st/2nd, 1993 (if they were Sat/Sun), again...memory fails me :(

Re: Awsome digging tool... Last one you'll every buy...

Do you happen to know what type of steel is used (specifically, like 5160, L6, O1, 1095, 4140 etc) and how its heat treated? Lasivian is correct, tempered steel can be ground, if done correctly, without losing any of its strength. I use a variable speed belt grinder, but then I make knives for a living and not everyone will have one of these. Keep the steel cool and dip frequently in water. If you are adventurous, don't use gloves...if its too hot to hold comfortably, dip it!

Re: Awsome digging tool... Last one you'll every buy...

Bertman, I got my digger yesterday from Terry. It is one hefty peice of steel. It is very sharp, and I don't think it could be broken even if you tried. Thanks . Mike.

Timberwolf,
Flash was from Tulsa... I didn't know him that well but his memory will live for a long time as I don't think I'll ever wear out the digger I bought from him... Thanks for the photo, just saved it with the rest of the gang...

Knipper,
Not sure of the type of steel these are made of... Do know that it is some very tough stuff though... Thanks for the information on how to prevent over heating the steel...
