hey, this is my first post. im laid off right now and have been metal detecting around where i live. well this morning i found a 1872 2 cent coin. the shape is perfect except for one thing. its tarnished a blue/green. im not sure if i should try and clean it or just leave it the way it is. the signal showed it as a quarter. i started to dig and i found it about 4-5 inches down. someone please let me know what to do about the tarnish problem. i will post a pic in the next day. thanks, greg UPDATE, here are a few pics of the coin. i am sorry about the qualitly of the pics, but my scanner is not working right, infact, when it scanned them it went to a bmp. format. oh well. i will try to get better pics up for yall to see and please feel free to let me know what to do as well. thanks, greg horning

Welcome to tnet! If you can read it I would leave it at that!
Timekiller!
Ps I have a 1864 one I dug and thats what I did!That's purdy much what's recommended!

The 1872 2 cents is worth hundreds of dollars. Don't clean it, because it will lose a lot of value. Congrats on a nice find.

Before the speculation gets out of hand...can we see a photo of the coin? :)

1872 2 center sure would like to see it.

A photo would help in suggesting what to do. You're not going to remove the green color, that's just how it is now. But you want to keep the surfaces in good condition. NCS (Numismatic Conservation Service) is the name of the service for professional coin conservation/cleaning. If your coin is in really good condition, that is where I would send it first.

If you are concerned about value, don't do anything with it until you get a professional opinion.

(1) Welcome to Tnet.......

(2) DON'T CLEAN THE COIN.......

(3) LET'S SEE THOSE PICS......

Don't clean keep it the way it is. Please post pic of it......Matt

Nice way to start out your hunting career! Let's see a good closeup if that's possible. Congrats and welcome aboard....jgas

please! please! please! don't clean it just leave it that way until you can have a professional take a look at it. what a great find! wtg :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft:

Awesome find there WTG.

Welcome to Tnet :hello2:

Awesome 2 cent piece :headbang:

Thank you for the photos. Your coin is actually in great shape for being a dug coin. My first 2c piece was so crusty I couldn't even see the date. So not only is it a pretty, "greenie"--but also it is a scarce date to find.

This is a great find! And no, don't clean it.

Best Wishes,

Buckleboy
