Had a great (hot) day down river from an IW fort.

First object I'm trying to ID is what I initially thought to be a pocket watch half, but ruled this out. It's approx. 2" diameter round, domed on one end and tire shaped reverse. Copper/brass material has turned green. It is in the cropped pic below shoulder scale segment.

Second, there are numerous rings which resemble grease cartridge end rings where the pull tab goes before use. Am I right on this? Please see the other cropped photo....they vary from 2" to 2 1/2" diameter. Just want to be sure before I discard them......they are the only 'trash' I found along all these IW items, so I want to be sure....thanks much in advance

Huh.
Not sure about that pocket watch half looking piece. Maybe pictures of items from the era could show a telescope ,or field glasses end cap?

The first item looks like a piece from where the handlebars and forks meet the frame on a bike, the stem to frame. The thing that's odd is the metal type so maybe some type of bearing race although I think brass/copper would wear out in that application?

Very cool. Any dates on those shells? Some of them look like benet-primed cartridges from the 1870s, others look like .45-70s from the 1880s.

Are those old buttons? From what Ive read here on T-net, a good way to safely clean old buttons is with a wooden toothpick.

Hello and thanks for the interest......the boxer primed ones are 1886 FA Rifle. No dates on the benet primed carts. The 50-70 certainly date from the earliest presence of the fort.

Yes they are....4 in one day.....amazing for me and in this location. You are correct about cleaning them, but I go supersized....I use the bamboo cooking skewers for this heavy patina/ brass oxidation.....even then, it is so caked that I think I would need electrolysis to get it off.....I'm just leaving as is for now. Thanks for your interest.
