Hi rea,
Here are some pics of my avitar, it is a token maybe of a ship owner.
One side has George and the dragon, it says "promissory halfpenny" 1796.

On the other side there is a sailing ship with a fish under, at first I thought
it was a whale but now I think it could be a salmon because round the edge is this.

COURTNEY & FROST ???? PAYABLE AT S. SALMONS.

Thank you for your interest

That's a really handsome old Conder* token! It's listed in Dalton & Hamer's book, The Provincial Coinage of the 18th Century, and is attributed as follows:

Hampshire, Portsea.

"S. Salmon kept the 'Brown Bear'; John Courtney, the 'George'; and Edward Frost, the 'Ship.' The salmon on the reverse refers to one issuer, St. George and the Dragon to another, and the ship to the other. Evidently the licensed victuallers experienced difficulty in getting regal copper coin, and thus acted in conjunction to meet the occasion."

Engraver— Willets. Manufacturer— Kempson

Seven varieties of this halfpenny token have been reported.

Here's one showing a bit more detail:

* Such 18th century tokens are called "Conder tokens" after James Conder, an early collector who produced a book on the subject in 1798, An Arrangement of Provincial Coins, Tokens, and Medalets Issued in Great Britain, Ireland, and the Colonies.
