Detector(s) used

While metal detecting with my CTX, I found 8 empty western .38 s(maybe) bullet casings dumped in one hole. My theory is they came from an 8 shot revolver. The site was mainly used as a ball field next to a school from the 1930's. Any idea on:

What type of gun it was(was it a revolver or automatic(I would think not since they were found in the same hole)?
Why do I find vintage bullet casings next to schools?

Cant help with the id, but the socially engineered hysteria over guns near schools today didn't exist in the 30s. Back then, kids often brought their hunting guns to school so they could hunt afterwards. Not in the cities, of course.

It is possible that they are .38 ACP caliber cartridge casings but more than likely .38 caliber Revolver cartridge casings. In all likelihood, someone shot a .38 calibered Revolver there some time before the school and ball-field was built. Most folks would leave the casings laying on the ground and if buried in one hole, someone may have been burying evidence. Check out unsolved shootings and murders from the late 1800's up to just before the school and ball-field were built to see if any were committed with .38 caliber bullets.

Well, the possibility that these were part of a crime is low. The factors involved limit that. They weren't buried that deep at all. They were in the gray clay layer which is where all the other finds from that time period reside which means they were dumped on the surface. The area is next to a church which is surrounded by houses so it is the most inconvenient place to murder someone. It could be a crime of passion OR a police officers rounds but I think they would have been picked-up. That is why I am curious about the type of weapon. If someone says, there isn't an 8 shot revolver that takes those rounds, then I need to look elsewhere.

....Take 'em to the cop shop....explain that they AREN'T YOUR FINGER PRINTS !

If I called the cops every time I found a bunch of bullet casings they would have me locked up by now. Likely it was kids playing with them or dumped from a revolver. I played with empty casings all the time as a kid.

You win the prize for the most plausible reason why a bunch bullet casings are there. Like wise it was just too cool to bring fired casing to school to show and tell with the classmates. Ah the days of smelling the burnt powder from a freshly fired shell.

I hope the prize is shiny.
